College football doesn’t give coaches much time anymore.
One disappointing season can completely change the conversation, and entering 2026, several recognizable names are under serious pressure to deliver.
Mike Norvell — Florida State
Nobody on this list needs a turnaround more than Mike Norvell.
Florida State went 13-0 in 2023, but the program has fallen dramatically since then. Norvell enters 2026 with a 38-34 record at FSU and received the maximum 5.0 hot-seat rating from CBS Sports.
Another bad season in Tallahassee could finally force Florida State to make a change.
Shane Beamer — South Carolina
The pressure has skyrocketed on Shane Beamer.
South Carolina narrowly missed the Playoff in 2024 before taking a major step backward, and now Beamer enters Year 6 with stars LaNorris Sellers and Dylan Stewart still on the roster.
Beamer has built expectations in Columbia. Now he has to meet them.
Jeff Lebby — Mississippi State
How patient will Mississippi State remain with Jeff Lebby?
Lebby is just 7-18 through two seasons, and life isn’t getting easier with the SEC moving to nine conference games.
Mississippi State doesn’t expect to compete for national championships every season, but eventually there has to be legitimate progress. Another season near the bottom of the SEC could make this conversation uncomfortable.
Lincoln Riley — USC
USC didn’t hire Lincoln Riley to simply be pretty good.
The Trojans hired him to compete for national championships.
Riley is 35-18 at USC, but the program still hasn’t become the powerhouse many expected when he left Oklahoma. With USC now firmly established in the Big Ten, another disappointing season would only increase questions about whether Riley is actually the coach who can return the Trojans to the top.
Dabo Swinney — Clemson
Dabo Swinney isn’t on the same type of hot seat as Norvell or Beamer.
But the pressure is absolutely real.
Clemson went just 7-6 in 2025 despite entering the season ranked inside the preseason Top 5. It was Swinney’s worst season since 2010, and suddenly a coach who once appeared untouchable has something to prove again.
Swinney has won two national championships and built Clemson into a powerhouse. That history gives him far more security than anyone else on this list.
But Clemson isn’t supposed to go 7-6.
For these five coaches, 2026 could become a defining season.
Some are trying to save their jobs. Others are trying to prove they can still win at the level their programs demand.
