Spain are back on top of world football.
Ferran Torres scored the decisive goal in the 106th minute of extra time as Spain defeated Argentina 1-0 in the 2026 FIFA World Cup final, capturing the nation’s second World Cup title and ending Argentina’s hopes of defending the trophy they won in Qatar four years earlier. Ferran Torres, once questioned by many supporters, delivered the biggest goal of his career when it mattered most.
The defeat marks a painful ending for Argentina and potentially the final World Cup appearance of Lionel Messi. The 39-year-old left the field in tears after falling just short of adding another World Cup title to his legendary career. While Messi exits as one of football’s greatest players, Spain now appears poised to become the sport’s next dominant international power thanks to a core featuring Rodri, Lamine Yamal, Pedri, Cubarsí and several stars entering their prime.
Spain’s triumph also closes the chapter on Argentina’s reign as world champions. After lifting the trophy in 2022, La Albiceleste came within one match of repeating, but on this night Spain’s discipline, patience and depth ultimately proved decisive.
