The SEC enters the 2026 season looking as loaded as ever. National title contenders are scattered throughout the conference, and even the middle tier features programs capable of pulling major upsets. Here’s how the league stacks up heading into Week 1.
1. Georgia Bulldogs
Kirby Smart once again has the SEC’s most complete roster. Gunner Stockton inherits an experienced offensive line and one of the nation’s best defenses. The Bulldogs remain the team to beat and are eyeing a third straight SEC title.
2. Texas Longhorns
The Longhorns have recruited at an elite level for years and possess another championship-caliber roster. The talent is undeniable, and Texas should once again be in the thick of both the SEC and College Football Playoff race.
3. Oklahoma Sooners
John Mateer is back to full strength after last year’s hand injury, giving Brent Venables one of the SEC’s most dangerous quarterbacks. The Sooners have legitimate playoff expectations and could finish even higher if Mateer plays to his potential.
4. LSU Tigers
Lane Kiffin has assembled an explosive roster in Baton Rouge. LSU has enough talent to compete with anyone in the conference, but consistency in the biggest games remains the next hurdle, but with a new coaching staff under Kiffin expect the unexpected with this team.
5. Ole Miss Rebels
Pete Golding fields one of the SEC’s most explosive offenses. The Rebels have enough firepower to upset anyone led by dynamic duo of Trinidad Chambliss and Kewan Lacy, but they’ll need to prove they can survive the conference’s weekly grind with a new head coach.
6. Alabama Crimson Tide
Kalen DeBoer’s third season may be his most important yet. Alabama’s defense should again be among the nation’s best, but questions remain about whether the offense can establish a reliable running game behind quarterback Austin Mack or could Keelon Russell come into the picture.
7. Texas A&M Aggies
The Aggies have the talent to challenge for a playoff spot but still need to show they can consistently finish close games against elite competition after losing to every top team they faced last year.
8. Tennessee Volunteers
Tennessee remains dangerous thanks to its tempo and athleticism. The Volunteers may not be among the SEC favorites, but they’re capable of knocking off anyone on the right Saturday led by veteran coach Josh Heupel.
9. Missouri Tigers
Missouri continues to quietly build a solid program. The Tigers may not have the star power of the league’s heavyweights, but they’re physical and capable of another winning season.
10. South Carolina Gamecocks
Shane Beamer has elevated South Carolina into one of the SEC’s toughest outs. The Gamecocks have enough talent to reach the top half of the conference if they find offensive consistency with LaNorris Sellers under Center.
11. Florida Gators
Florida with a new coaching staff has improved its roster, but after a disappointing 2025 season, the Gators still have plenty to prove. The schedule won’t do them any favor as they face yet another gauntlet.
12. Auburn Tigers
Auburn continues to recruit well, but translating talent into wins remains the biggest challenge. The Tigers have upset potential but enter the season with more questions than answers under a new coaching staff.
13. Vanderbilt Commodores
Clark Lea has transformed Vanderbilt into a respectable SEC program after nearly making the College Football Playoff last year. The Commodores won’t be an easy win anymore and could surprise a few teams this fall, but I see them heading back down to reality this year.
14. Arkansas Razorbacks
Arkansas always plays with toughness, but climbing the SEC standings has become increasingly difficult as the conference grows deeper. Arkansas has enough talent to play spoiler, though a difficult schedule limits its margin for error.
15. Kentucky Wildcats
The Wildcats are looking to rebound after a disappointing campaign. They’ll need improved quarterback play and offensive production to move up these rankings.
16. Mississippi State Bulldogs
Mississippi State enters the season with the longest road to relevance in the SEC. The Bulldogs are rebuilding and face one of the toughest schedules in college football.
The SEC once again looks like college football’s premier conference. Georgia enters as the favorite, but Texas, Oklahoma, LSU and several others have enough talent to make this one of the deepest and most competitive races in the country.
