Cristiano Ronaldo’s World Cup story somehow found another historic chapter.
In Portugal’s dramatic 2-1 win over Croatia, Ronaldo scored from the penalty spot to become the oldest player ever to score in a World Cup knockout match. At 41 years old, in his sixth World Cup, he finally got his first knockout-stage goal on the sport’s biggest stage.
But the moment after the match mattered even more.
Following the final whistle, Ronaldo put on Diogo Jota’s No. 21 Portugal jersey, pointed to the sky, and joined his teammates in an emotional tribute. Friday marks one year since Jota and his brother André Silva died in a car accident in Spain. Jota played 49 games for Portugal and scored 14 goals.
That is what made this win feel bigger than just surviving Croatia.
Portugal was pushed to the edge. Croatia led through Ivan Perišić, Ronaldo answered with the penalty, and Gonçalo Ramos scored the stoppage-time winner. Croatia then thought it had equalized late, only for VAR to wipe it away for offside.
Now Portugal moves on to face Spain in the Round of 16, but this night will be remembered for more than the score. Ronaldo broke another record, Portugal stayed alive, and the entire squad made sure Jota’s memory was right there with them.
For Ronaldo, this was history. For Portugal, it was emotion. For Jota, it was a tribute that hit the whole football world.
