The United States just received the biggest possible boost ahead of Monday night’s World Cup Round of 16 showdown against Belgium.
After days of controversy surrounding striker Folarin Balogun and his red card against Bosnia and Herzegovina, FIFA has suspended the automatic one-match ban and cleared the forward to play against Belgium.
The decision comes as a stunning reversal. Balogun had originally been shown a straight red card after a VAR review during the Americans’ 2-0 Round of 32 victory. Multiple reports earlier in the week stated there was no appeal process available and that he would miss the Belgium match.
Instead, FIFA reportedly used Article 27 of its disciplinary code to suspend the punishment on a one-year probationary basis. The red card remains on Balogun’s record, but he is now eligible for the biggest match of the United States’ tournament.
The timing could not be more important.
Balogun has been the face of the American attack in this World Cup, scoring three goals and contributing either a goal or assist in every match he has played. The USMNT had already begun preparing contingency plans involving players such as Ricardo Pepi and Haji Wright before the decision was announced.
Now, head coach Mauricio Pochettino gets his top striker back for a Belgium side that has looked dangerous throughout the tournament. The Americans are attempting to reach their first World Cup quarterfinal since 2002, and having Balogun available dramatically changes the outlook.
Whether fans agree with FIFA’s decision or not, there is no denying its impact. A few days ago, the USMNT appeared destined to face Belgium without its leading scorer. Now, one of the tournament’s breakout stars will be on the field with a quarterfinal berth on the line.
