England’s World Cup dream is still alive, but it took a dramatic comeback and another historic performance from captain Harry Kane to get there.
For more than an hour in Atlanta, England looked destined for one of the biggest shocks of the tournament. DR Congo stunned the Three Lions early and carried a 1-0 lead deep into the second half, frustrating England with organized defending and outstanding goalkeeping. But when England needed a hero, Kane delivered once again. He scored the equalizer in the 75th minute before firing home the winner in the 86th minute to complete a dramatic 2-1 comeback victory.
The goals were significant for more than just sending England through to the Round of 16. Kane’s latest strike moved him past Brazilian legend Pelé on the all-time World Cup scoring list, adding yet another chapter to an already legendary international career. Kane has spent this tournament rewriting records, already becoming England’s all-time leading World Cup scorer earlier in the group stage.
Yet despite the victory, England will know they cannot afford another performance like this one. Thomas Tuchel’s side struggled for long stretches and looked vulnerable against a fearless DR Congo team that pushed them to the brink. England’s attack finally found answers late, but defensive lapses and a lack of urgency nearly cost them their tournament.
Now comes one of the most intimidating tests in international football.
England will travel to Mexico City to face Mexico national football team in the Round of 16 at the legendary Estadio Azteca. Few venues in world football carry more history, and the atmosphere will heavily favor the host nation. Mexico advanced after defeating Ecuador and will have the support of more than 80,000 fans behind them.
For England, the path to glory is becoming increasingly difficult. But if Kane continues producing moments like he did against DR Congo, the Three Lions will believe they can beat anyone.
