The San Antonio Spurs Have Life Now

Just when it looked like the New York Knicks were on the verge of a championship parade, Victor Wembanyama reminded the basketball world why he may already be the face of the NBA.

Facing a 2-0 series deficit and staring down the possibility of an insurmountable hole, the San Antonio Spurs marched into Madison Square Garden and escaped with a season-saving 115-111 victory in Game 3 of the NBA Finals.

Wembanyama was spectacular.

The 22-year-old superstar finished with 32 points, eight rebounds, six assists, and three blocks, delivering his first NBA Finals victory and silencing a Madison Square Garden crowd that was ready to celebrate a commanding 3-0 series lead.

The performance couldn’t have come at a better time.

After a crushing Game 2 loss in San Antonio, where a late turnover and missed shot helped the Knicks escape with a one-point victory, questions were beginning to emerge about whether the young Spurs were ready for the moment. Wembanyama answered those questions emphatically.

This wasn’t just about scoring.

Every time New York seemed ready to take control, Wembanyama responded. Whether it was a massive three-pointer, a clutch defensive stop, or simply creating opportunities for teammates, he looked every bit like the superstar San Antonio believes can lead them to multiple championships.

Stephon Castle provided major support with 23 points, helping the Spurs withstand strong performances from Jalen Brunson and OG Anunoby, who each scored 32 and 28 points respectively for New York.

The loss was a wake-up call for the Knicks.

New York entered the night riding a 13-game playoff winning streak and had not lost a postseason game since April. For nearly two months, everything had gone right for the franchise chasing its first NBA championship since 1973. On Monday night, reality finally hit.

Perhaps the biggest takeaway is that the Spurs now have life.

No team has ever come back from a 3-0 deficit in the NBA Finals. Had New York won Game 3, the series would have effectively been over. Instead, San Antonio has shifted the pressure squarely onto the Knicks heading into Game 4.

For weeks, Wembanyama has looked like a future superstar.

On Monday night, he looked like a present one.

The Knicks still lead the series 2-1, but thanks to Wembanyama’s masterpiece in Madison Square Garden, the 2026 NBA Finals suddenly feel very far from over.
