Some sports stories are bigger than football.
This is one of them.
Former NFL superstar Chris Johnson, one of the most explosive running backs the league has ever seen, revealed this week that he has been diagnosed with ALS, also known as Lou Gehrig’s disease. Johnson said he was diagnosed in 2025 after noticing weakness in his right hand, and doctors believe he has sporadic ALS, the most common form of the disease.
The news shocked the football world.
Johnson, known to fans as “CJ2K,” was one of the most electrifying players of his generation. His legendary 2009 season saw him rush for 2,006 yards while setting the NFL record with 2,509 yards from scrimmage, a mark that still stands today.
Now, at just 39 years old, Johnson faces the toughest challenge of his life.
In an emotional interview with Michael Strahan on Good Morning America, Johnson explained that the disease has progressed rapidly. He now uses a speech-generating device to communicate, but emphasized that his spirit remains unchanged. “ALS has changed what my body can do, but it hasn’t changed who I am,” Johnson said.
Johnson said there is no history of ALS in his family, making the diagnosis even more unexpected. Doctors classified his condition as sporadic ALS, which accounts for the majority of cases.
The response from around the NFL was immediate.
The Tennessee Titans, where Johnson became one of the most beloved players in franchise history, released statements of support. Former teammates, players, and fans across the league rallied around the three-time Pro Bowler after hearing the news.
While Johnson’s football accomplishments are extraordinary, this story is about something much bigger than statistics.
It’s about perseverance.
Rather than hide from the diagnosis, Johnson chose to speak publicly in hopes of raising awareness and helping others affected by ALS. He is currently participating in clinical trials while continuing to fight the disease every day.
For a player whose career was defined by speed, strength, and explosiveness, the diagnosis is heartbreaking. But if Johnson’s NFL career taught fans anything, it’s that he has never backed down from a challenge.
The entire football community is now behind him as he faces the biggest battle of his life.
