The NFL season is still 100 days away, but the league already feels chaotic.
ESPN recently dropped its biggest offseason storylines heading into the summer, and it is clear there are massive questions hanging over some of the NFL’s biggest stars and franchises. From superstar contract disputes to major coaching changes and quarterback recoveries, the next few months could completely shape the 2026 season.
Lamar Jackson’s Contract Situation Could Shake the NFL
One of the biggest stories involves reigning MVP Lamar Jackson.
Baltimore wants to extend Jackson before he hits free agency in 2028, but according to ESPN, there has not been significant progress toward a new deal. Some around the league reportedly believe Jackson may wait another year as quarterback contracts continue exploding in value. With stars like Caleb Williams, Drake Maye, and Jayden Daniels also nearing future extensions, the market could become even more expensive.
If Lamar waits and dominates again this season, he could potentially reset the quarterback market entirely.
George Pickens and the Cowboys Could Get Messy
The George Pickens situation in Dallas is another major storyline.
Pickens signed his franchise tag worth over $27 million, but he reportedly wants a long-term extension that the Cowboys have not been willing to give him yet. ESPN mentioned the possibility of tension carrying into training camp or even the regular season if progress is not made.
Considering Pickens’ personality and Dallas constantly living under the spotlight, this situation feels like it could become one of the biggest NFL dramas of the year.
Brandon Aiyuk Appears Headed Out of San Francisco
According to ESPN, Brandon Aiyuk’s relationship with the 49ers is essentially broken.
San Francisco has not cut him yet because they are still exploring trade options, but there is growing belief that Aiyuk could be on another team before Week 1. If that happens, it would mark the end of another major era for the 49ers offense.
Aiyuk becoming available would instantly make several contenders interested, especially teams needing another elite receiver.
Buffalo Is Entering a Completely New Era
For years, Buffalo’s identity came from Sean McDermott running the defense while Josh Allen carried the offense.
Now things look very different.
Joe Brady has taken over as head coach, while Jim Leonhard steps in as defensive coordinator. ESPN highlighted how important the defensive transition will be because McDermott directed that side of the ball for nearly a decade.
The Bills remain contenders, but this season feels like the beginning of an entirely new chapter for the franchise.
The Eagles Offense Is Changing
Philadelphia may look very different offensively this season.
Jalen Hurts is reportedly embracing new coordinator Sean Mannion’s system, which could feature more snaps under center and a new offensive structure. ESPN also noted that DeVonta Smith may emerge as Hurts’ true No. 1 target this year.
That alone will create massive discussion considering A.J. Brown has been viewed as the face of the Eagles receiving corps.
Quarterback Health Could Define the Entire Season
Several major quarterbacks are working back from injuries, including Patrick Mahomes, Jayden Daniels, Daniel Jones, and Bo Nix.
The NFL is simply better when its stars are healthy, and early reports on all four quarterbacks have reportedly been positive. But training camp and preseason action will tell the real story.
If those quarterbacks return to form quickly, the playoff race could become absolutely loaded.
The 2024 Receiver Class Faces Huge Pressure
ESPN also pointed toward the 2024 wide receiver class entering a critical third season.
Marvin Harrison Jr., Xavier Worthy, Brian Thomas Jr., and Ladd McConkey are all expected to take another leap. Meanwhile, pressure is reportedly building around players like Keon Coleman and Xavier Legette after inconsistent starts to their careers.
In today’s NFL, Year 3 is often where elite receivers separate themselves from everyone else.
Veteran Free Agents Still Linger
Some major names also remain unsigned.
Joey Bosa, Stefon Diggs, Jadeveon Clowney, and Odell Beckham Jr. are all still looking for teams. One signing could dramatically change a contender overnight, especially if Diggs lands with a playoff-caliber offense.
And knowing the NFL, at least one of these stars will probably end up making headlines during training camp.
The countdown to kickoff has officially begun, and the league already feels like a powder keg waiting to explode.
