Texas Tech Coach Stands By Brendan Sorsby Amid Gambling Addiction Battle

Texas Tech head coach Joey McGuire delivered one of the most powerful statements of the college football offseason this week.

While much of the discussion surrounding quarterback Brendan Sorsby has focused on NCAA eligibility, gambling violations and potential suspensions, McGuire chose to focus on something else entirely: recovery.

“I am proud of Brendan for getting help with his gambling addiction,” McGuire said while discussing Sorsby’s situation. McGuire emphasized that Sorsby sought treatment at a level rarely seen among college athletes and that Texas Tech will continue supporting him regardless of the NCAA’s final decision.

It’s a refreshing perspective in an era where college athletes are often judged solely by wins, losses and headlines.

Sorsby’s story has become one of the most significant off-field stories in college football. The former Indiana and Cincinnati quarterback transferred to Texas Tech expecting to lead one of the Big 12’s most talented rosters. Instead, he entered a residential treatment program for gambling addiction after it was revealed he had violated NCAA gambling rules.

The NCAA has already denied his reinstatement request, putting his entire 2026 season in jeopardy. Texas Tech continues to fight the ruling through appeals and legal action, arguing that while Sorsby deserves consequences, those consequences should not end his career.

And honestly, that’s where this story becomes bigger than football.

Sports gambling has exploded across America over the last decade. Betting advertisements are everywhere. Sportsbooks sponsor leagues, teams and broadcasts. For many young adults, gambling has become as accessible as opening an app on a phone.

The result has been an increase in gambling addiction cases among college students and young athletes, something McGuire specifically addressed when speaking about Sorsby. He noted that gambling problems are becoming increasingly common among college-aged individuals and cannot be separated from the realities facing student-athletes today.

That doesn’t mean Sorsby shouldn’t be punished.

Even McGuire agrees there should be consequences. Sorsby himself has acknowledged that he deserves a penalty for violating NCAA rules. The debate centers on whether those consequences should permanently derail his football future despite his efforts to seek treatment and address the addiction.

For Texas Tech, the situation is especially painful because Sorsby was expected to be one of the faces of a team with legitimate Big 12 championship aspirations. Instead of discussing offensive schemes and playoff expectations, the program is fighting to keep its starting quarterback eligible.

Still, McGuire’s comments serve as an important reminder.

Before Brendan Sorsby is a quarterback, a transfer portal star or a potential NFL prospect, he’s a young man battling an addiction. Football matters. Accountability matters. But recovery matters too.

And regardless of how the NCAA ultimately rules, Joey McGuire made it clear that Texas Tech is standing behind its quarterback.
