Barcelona Ready to Break the Bank for Julián Alvarez

Barcelona may be ready to make one of the biggest transfer swings of the summer.

According to reports, Barça are hopeful of signing Julián Alvarez from Atletico Madrid and believe the Argentine striker wants the move. A €100 million offer has reportedly been discussed, though Atletico have denied receiving an official bid and insist Alvarez is not for sale.

Alvarez would be a massive statement signing for Barcelona. He is 26, already a World Cup winner with Argentina, and brings the exact profile Barça need up front: movement, pressing, link-up play and finishing. With Robert Lewandowski no longer the long-term answer, Barcelona need a striker who can lead the line for years.

The problem is Atletico Madrid. Selling a star striker to a La Liga rival is not something they will want to do, especially after signing Alvarez from Manchester City in a deal reportedly worth up to €95 million.

That means Barcelona may have to go above €100 million to make Atletico even consider it. Reports in Spain have already suggested the price could rise closer to €135 million with add-ons.

If Alvarez truly wants Barcelona, this could get ugly fast. Atletico are already reportedly frustrated with the rumors, while Barça clearly see him as the striker who can headline their next era.

For Barcelona, this would be more than a transfer. It would be a message.
