Kyle Larson Leaves Bristol With Twice the Heartbreak

BRISTOL, Tenn. — Kyle Larson left Bristol Motor Speedway with speed to spare — and no trophies to show for it.

In a weekend defined by dominance and frustration, Larson endured a double heartbreak across two races, coming up just short both Saturday and Sunday despite leading a combined 500-plus laps.

On Saturday night in the NASCAR O’Reilly Auto Parts Series race, Larson controlled the event from the outset, sweeping both stages and leading a race-high 230 laps. But a late caution flipped the race on its head, allowing Connor Zilisch to stay out on older tires and seize track position. Zilisch held off Larson over the closing laps, leaving Larson to settle for second after what had been a dominant performance.

Less than 24 hours later, the script repeated itself in the NASCAR Cup Series race.

Larson surged to the front early Sunday and led a race-high 284 laps in the Food City 500, appearing poised to snap a lengthy winless streak. He captured both Stage 1 and Stage 2 and controlled much of the race before late cautions and pit strategy shuffled the running order.

When it mattered most, Larson faded in the closing laps, ultimately finishing third behind Ryan Blaney and race winner Ty Gibbs.

The result extended a frustrating drought for Larson, the reigning Cup Series champion, who has not visited Victory Lane since winning at Kansas in 2025 — a track the series returns to next. The stretch now approaches a full calendar year without a win for the No. 5 team.

For Larson, Bristol showcased both his continued dominance on one of NASCAR’s most demanding tracks and the fine margins that have kept him from closing out races.

Speed has not been the issue.

Finishing them off has.
