HILTON HEAD, S.C. — The defending champion is back — battered, but not backing down.
Justin Thomas returns to Harbour Town Golf Links this week to defend his title at the RBC Heritage, despite still managing his way back from a lingering injury that has shadowed his recent form and preparation.
Thomas captured last year’s event in dramatic fashion, winning a playoff to secure one of the signature victories of his career and reclaim momentum after a stretch away from the winner’s circle. Now, he returns to the same course carrying a different kind of challenge: physical uncertainty.
Thomas underwent back surgery in the offseason after dealing with persistent issues that forced him to miss extended time. While he has been cleared to return to full competition, he acknowledged that the recovery process is ongoing and has impacted his preparation heading into the week.
Despite that, the expectation remains the same.
He is still the man to beat.
Thomas enters as the reigning RBC Heritage champion after his playoff win over Andrew Novak last year, a victory that marked his first PGA Tour title in nearly three years at the time and reaffirmed his place among the game’s elite.
Now, the storyline shifts from comeback to defense — and whether his body can hold up under the grind of a tightly packed PGA Tour schedule.
The challenge at Harbour Town is unique: narrow fairways, demanding approach shots and precision over power. It is a course that rewards control more than raw distance, a layout that has historically suited Thomas when fully healthy and in rhythm.
But questions remain.
Can he sustain four days of tournament golf without his injury becoming a factor? Can he recapture the same sharpness that carried him to last year’s playoff win?
Around him, a loaded field waits to capitalize if he falters.
Still, Thomas has proven throughout his career that he thrives in pressure moments — a two-time major champion and former world No. 1 who has repeatedly delivered on golf’s biggest stages.
For now, though, the focus is simpler.
Survive the week physically. Compete mentally. And try to defend a title that already feels harder the second time around.
The champion is back in Hilton Head.
And this time, he’s fighting more than just the field.
