AMES, Iowa — After a rare stumble, No. 9 Iowa State returned home and reminded the Big 12 just how dangerous this team can be.
In a dominant 87‑57 victory over the UCF Knights on Tuesday night, the Cyclones throttled a sneaky good opponent to snap a two‑game skid and realign themselves atop the conference pecking order. The Cyclones improved to 17‑2 overall and 4‑2 in Big 12 play, while UCF dropped to 14‑4 and 3‑3 in league action.
This wasn’t a close call — it was a statement. Iowa State jumped out early and never looked back, building a 44‑26 halftime lead and extending it with high‑octane offense and lockdown defense. The Cyclones pressured UCF into 19 turnovers, converting those miscues into easy transition points and forcing the Knights out of rhythm offensively.
Junior guard Joshua Jefferson delivered another all‑around performance, posting 17 points, 10 rebounds and a career-high 12 assists for his second triple-double of the season — a rare feat in Division I this year. Freshman sharpshooter Milan Momcilovic led all scorers with 20 points, knocking down four threes, while Killyan Toure and Jamarion Batemon added 12 points apiece and Blake Buchanan contributed 11 with six rebounds.
Iowa State’s defense was suffocating, leading to easy transition opportunities that ignited Hilton Coliseum. The Cyclones also out-rebounded UCF on both ends, controlling the paint and limiting second-chance points. UCF struggled from the field, unable to string together sustained offensive possessions against a disciplined Iowa State front.
The win was exactly what Iowa State needed. After back-to-back losses had the Cyclones sliding out of the top five, this emphatic home performance provided clear evidence that this team still means business. Head coach T.J. Otzelberger called for accountability after the skid, and his players answered with a complete effort that blended veteran leadership with emerging young talent.
For UCF, the loss continues a trend of inconsistency against ranked competition and highlights some of the challenges the Knights face in sustaining momentum in Big 12 play.
Iowa State now looks to build on this dominant showing as the Big 12 grinds on, giving fans — and the rest of college basketball — another reason to take this Cyclones squad seriously. On a night when everything clicked, this was more than a bounce-back win — it was a reminder that, when Iowa State is firing on all cylinders, very few teams can hang.
