The ACC Championship Race: A Four-Team Gridlock

The final ACC Power Rankings reflect the absurd amount of parity at the top, where tiebreakers will determine the two participants in Charlotte.

1. Miami Hurricanes (9-2, 5-2): The Eye Test Winners

Despite having two conference losses, the Hurricanes jump to the top spot after dismantling Virginia Tech and showing the highest ceiling of any team in the league. With the highest CFP ranking (#12), they control their path if the three 6-1 teams eat each other. Their final game against Pitt is essentially a quarter-final.

2. Virginia Cavaliers (9-2, 6-1): Steady as She Goes

Virginia has quietly maintained one of the best records in the conference, standing at 6-1. They have been efficient and consistent, putting them in an ideal position. The Cavaliers will be heavily favored in their rivalry clash, the “Commonwealth Cup,” against Virginia Tech. A win guarantees them no worse than a share of the best regular-season record.

3. SMU Mustangs (8-3, 6-1): The Newcomer Contender

The Mustangs have proven they belong in the P4 landscape, highlighted by a strong win over Louisville in Week 13. Their 6-1 conference record speaks for itself. They head west for a road game against fellow newcomer Cal, which will be a must-win to stay in the title conversation.

4. Pitt Panthers (8-3, 6-1): The Weekend Wreckers

Pitt threw a wrench into the ACC race by taking down Georgia Tech last weekend. Coach Narduzzi’s defense-first mentality has resulted in a 6-1 conference record, putting them in position to contend in their final regular-season game. Their home matchup against Miami is arguably the biggest game of the ACC season.

5. Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets (9-2, 6-2): From First to Fifth

It was a heartbreaking week for the Yellow Jackets, who fell from the top of the league after a critical loss to Pitt. Despite the 9-2 overall record, a second conference loss puts them behind the 6-1 teams. They now look to end their season on a high note by hosting their biggest rival, the #4 Georgia Bulldogs, on Friday.

Bowl Watch & Rivalry Drama

The middle tier is defined by teams fighting for better bowl placement and rivalry bragging rights.

  • Duke (6-5, 5-2): The Blue Devils are bowl-bound but have underachieved this season under coach Manny Diaz.
  • Clemson (6-5, 4-4): Dabo Swinney’s Tigers have won three straight to get bowl eligible and will look to defeat SEC rival South Carolina in the Palmetto Bowl.
  • Florida State (5-6, 2-6): The Seminoles are the highest-profile team still sweating bowl eligibility and potentially the most disappointing team in college football. It feels like years ago that FSU convincingly beat Alabama in Week 1. They must defeat rival Florida in the Sunshine State Showdown to earn a 6th win and secure a spot in the postseason.

Bottom Tier Battle: The worst records in the conference belong to Syracuse (1-6) hosts Boston College (0-7). who play each other in a final battle to avoid finishing dead last in the league standings.
