SEC Football Power Rankings: Week 8

Tier 1: The True Contenders

  1. Texas A&M Aggies (7-0, 4-0 SEC) The Aggies survived a massive road scare, beating Arkansas 45-42. While the defense struggled, Marcel Reed continues to win games. They are the only remaining undefeated team in the SEC, and their 4-0 league record is currently the standard. Next Week: at #20 LSU (Saturday, 7:30 PM ET)
  2. Alabama Crimson Tide (6-1, 4-0 SEC) The Tide delivered a statement in the “Third Saturday in October,” dominating Tennessee 37-20. The defense was sensational, holding the Vols’ high-powered offense in check. With four straight conference wins, Alabama is surging and ready for their next big test. Next Week: at South Carolina (Saturday, 3:30 PM ET)
  3. Georgia Bulldogs (6-1, 4-1 SEC) The Bulldogs handed Ole Miss their first loss in a thrilling 43-35 victory in Athens. Gunner Stockton was outstanding, and the victory validates Georgia’s elite status, moving them back into the top group of one-loss teams. Next Week: BYE

Tier 2: The One-Loss Contenders

  1. Ole Miss Rebels (6-1, 3-1 SEC) Despite losing their perfect record, the Rebels fought hard on the road in Athens, ultimately falling 43-35. They still have an elite offense and a great resume. The most immediate challenge? A hostile road environment. Next Week: at #13 Oklahoma (Saturday, 12:00 PM ET)
  2. Missouri Tigers (6-1, 2-1 SEC) The Mizzou train keeps rolling. They survived a scare at Auburn, winning 23-17 in overtime. The defense bailed them out when the offense stumbled. They are firmly entrenched as a top-10 team nationally. Next Week: at #10 Vanderbilt (Saturday, 3:30 PM ET)
  3. Oklahoma Sooners (6-1, 2-1 SEC) The Sooners needed a huge rebound after the Red River loss, and they got it, beating South Carolina 26-7. The defense looked like one of the best units in the league, shutting down the Gamecocks’ attack. Next Week: vs. #8 Ole Miss (Saturday, 12:00 PM ET)
  4. Vanderbilt Commodores (6-2, 2-2 SEC) The shocking upset of the year! The Commodores took down LSU 31-24 in Nashville. While their 2-2 conference record may not seem impressive, the six overall wins put them firmly in bowl contention and higher than many teams with better records. Next Week: vs. #15 Missouri (Saturday, 3:30 PM ET)

Tier 3: The Mid-Pack Battle

  1. LSU Tigers (5-2, 2-2 SEC) The loss to Vanderbilt 31-24 is deeply concerning. The defense remains a major issue, and they are quickly falling out of the conference championship race. A huge opportunity for a rebound win awaits this week. Next Week: vs. #3 Texas A&M (Saturday, 7:30 PM ET)
  2. Tennessee Volunteers (5-2, 2-2 SEC) The Vols were outmatched in Tuscaloosa, losing to Alabama 37-20. The offense stalled, and the defense couldn’t handle the Tide’s attack. They need a strong finish to salvage a major bowl bid. Next Week: at Kentucky (Saturday, 7:45 PM ET)
  3. Texas Longhorns (4-3, 1-3 SEC) It was ugly, but Texas got the win over Kentucky 16-13 in overtime. Arch Manning secured his first conference road victory, though the offense struggled mightily. They are still searching for their identity under Steve Sarkisian. Next Week: at Mississippi State (Saturday, 4:15 PM ET)
  4. Florida Gators (3-4, 2-2 SEC) The Gators secured a close home win over Mississippi State 23-21. At 3-4, they still need three more wins for bowl eligibility, but a 2-2 conference record gives them a fighting chance, albeit without head coach Billy Napier, who was fired Sunday. Next Week: BYE

  1. Mississippi State Bulldogs (4-3, 0-3 SEC) The Bulldogs fought hard but lost a tight one to Florida, 23-21. They are now 0-3 in conference play with all four overall wins coming from non-conference opponents. Next Week: vs. #22 Texas (Saturday, 4:15 PM ET)
  2. South Carolina Gamecocks (3-4, 1-4 SEC) The Gamecocks were handled by Oklahoma, losing 26-7. South Carolina is 1-4 in the league, and their path to a bowl game looks increasingly difficult. Next Week: vs. #4 Alabama (Saturday, 3:30 PM ET)
  3. Auburn Tigers (3-4, 0-4 SEC) The Tigers lost a heartbreaker in overtime to Missouri, 23-17. At 0-4 in conference play, the season is slipping away under Hugh Freeze. Next Week: vs. Arkansas (Saturday, 12:45 PM ET)
  4. Arkansas Razorbacks (2-5, 0-4 SEC) The Razorbacks lost a shootout to Texas A&M 45-42. Now at 2-5 overall and 0-4 in SEC play, their season is over, though there are signs of offensive life under interim coach Bobby Petrino. Next Week: at Auburn (Saturday, 12:45 PM ET)
  5. Kentucky Wildcats (2-5, 0-4 SEC) The Wildcats almost pulled off the upset against Texas, but fell 16-13 in overtime. They are playing hard but remain winless in the conference. Next Week: vs. #17 Tennessee (Saturday, 7:45 PM ET)
