ACC Football Power Rankings: Georgia Tech Soars; Virginia Tech a New Low

NCAA Football South Florida at Miami

Four teams seem to be separating from the pack through 3 weeks in the ACC. Miami, FSU and Georgia Tech are CFP contenders, and NC State is 3-0 and looking good as well. Virginia Tech fell to James Madison, leading to the firing of head coach Brent Pry. Perhaps the biggest story is that preseason Clemson is 1-2 and looking very vulnerable.

ACC Football Power Rankings

  1. Miami The Hurricanes cemented their status as a national title contender with a dominant win over a ranked in-state opponent in USF. Their offense and defense are firing on all cylinders as they’ll host the hated Florida Gators this week.
  2. Florida State The Seminoles were on a bye week but remain at the top of the conference with two impressive victories to start the season.
  3. Georgia Tech The Yellow Jackets had the biggest upset of the weekend, knocking off Clemson. Their perfect 3-0 record and a statement win show they are a legitimate threat to win the conference.
  4. NC State The Wolfpack improved to 3-0 with a solid victory over Wake Forest. NC State’s offense has been impressive, and they are off to a great start.
  5. California California’s transition to the ACC is going well, as they are now 3-0 with a commanding win over a Big Ten team. The Golden Bears have looked like a well-coached and disciplined team with a star in the making in QB Jaron-Keawe Sagapolutele.
  6. SMU The Mustangs rebounded from their loss at Baylor and cruised to an easy win over Missouri State.
  7. Louisville The Cardinals’ early-season offense has been strong, but they haven’t been tested. They won’t be tested by Bowling Green this week, either.
  8. Clemson After their stunning upset loss to Georgia Tech, the Tigers plummet in the rankings and are 1-2. The team has a lot to prove as they try to salvage their season.
  9. North Carolina The Tar Heels bounced back with a comfortable win over an outmatched FCS team in Richmond.
  10. Syracuse The Orange had a blowout win over FCS opponent Colgate, a great way to build momentum heading into conference play.
  11. Virginia Virginia had a strong showing with a decisive victory over FCS team William & Mary, and they should cruise over Stanford this weekend.
  12. Pitt The Panthers had a close loss in an exciting rivalry game to West Virginia that will sting for a long time.
  13. Duke Duke showed they can put up points but ultimately fell to a quality opponent in Tulane.
  14. Wake Forest The Demon Deacons lost at home to a good NC State team. They had a ten point lead but got shut out in the second half by the Wolfpack.
  15. Stanford Stanford finally got their first win of the season over a conference foe, a much-needed home victory over Boston College, elevating them from the basement of the ACC Power Rankings.
  16. Boston College The Eagles suffered a bad loss to a conference opponent in Stanford.
  17. Virginia Tech The Hokies are the biggest surprise of the season, and not in a good way. An 0-3 record including a home loss to Old Dominion puts them at the bottom of the rankings and without a head coach, as they fired Brent Pry Sunday.
