The New England Patriots made one of the biggest moves of the NFL free-agency window Tuesday, agreeing to a massive deal with wide receiver Romeo Doubs.
According to reports, the former Green Bay Packers wideout is heading to New England on a four-year contract worth up to $80 million, giving the Patriots a major new weapon on offense.
For a team trying to build around young quarterback Drake Maye, the move signals one thing clearly: New England is all-in on upgrading its passing attack.
Patriots Add a Needed Receiver
New England entered the offseason with an obvious need at wide receiver. After releasing star wideout Stefon Diggs, the Patriots were searching for a reliable target who could step in immediately and help stabilize the offense.

After an impressive breakout season that helped New England reach the AFC Championship, the franchise is determined to surround their young star quarterback with legitimate weapons. Doubs immediately becomes one of the top receiving options on the roster alongside players like Demario Douglas and Kayshon Boutte.
The contract — which averages roughly $17–20 million per year depending on incentives — shows the Patriots believe Doubs can grow into a true No. 1 or high-end No. 2 receiver in their offense.
And for Maye, it’s exactly the type of move that could accelerate his development.
Leaving Green Bay
Doubs spent the first four seasons of his career in Green Bay after being selected in the fourth round of the 2022 NFL Draft.
During his time with the Packers, he quietly became one of the team’s most reliable targets, totaling:

- 2,424 receiving yards
- 21 touchdowns
He also proved himself in the postseason, recording 20 catches for 371 yards and two touchdowns in four playoff games.
That playoff production likely helped raise his value in free agency — and convinced the Patriots he was worth a major investment.

With Maye entering another crucial season in his development, the team now has a bigger and more versatile receiver who can stretch the field, win contested catches, and operate as a reliable intermediate target.
