Malik Beasley gambling scandal takes dramatic turn with federal indictment
Former NBA guard Malik Beasley’s gambling saga escalated Monday as federal prosecutors unsealed an indictment alleging he manipulated his on-court performance as part of an illegal sports betting scheme during the 2023-24 NBA season.
According to the indictment, Beasley is accused of conspiring with former NBA player Ed Davis and several others to influence player prop bets while Beasley was a member of the Milwaukee Bucks. Prosecutors allege the scheme centered on Beasley’s individual statistics—not game outcomes—with wagers placed on categories such as rebounds and other prop markets.
One of the most eye-catching details in the indictment involves text messages allegedly exchanged between the conspirators. Prosecutors claim Beasley discussed moving conversations to Snapchat, a messaging platform known for disappearing messages, while coordinating aspects of the alleged betting operation. Those communications have become a key piece of the government’s case.
Federal authorities allege Beasley accepted cash payments and debt relief tied to substantial gambling losses in exchange for altering his statistical production in multiple games. The indictment also claims former teammate Ed Davis, who allegedly loaned Beasley money, played a central role in arranging the scheme.
The case represents one of the most significant gambling scandals to hit the NBA since former Toronto Raptors forward Jontay Porter received a lifetime ban for violating the league’s gambling rules.
Beasley, 29, spent nine NBA seasons with the Denver Nuggets, Minnesota Timberwolves, Utah Jazz, Los Angeles Lakers, Milwaukee Bucks and Detroit Pistons. Known as one of the league’s premier perimeter shooters, he averaged 16.3 points while appearing in all 82 games for Detroit during the 2024-25 season before his NBA career stalled amid the investigation.
Neither Beasley nor his attorney had publicly responded to Monday’s indictment at the time of publication. The NBA also had not issued an official statement.
The allegations remain just that—allegations—and Beasley is presumed innocent unless proven guilty in court. If prosecutors ultimately prove their case, however, it would mark another major blow to the integrity of professional basketball and further intensify scrutiny surrounding sports betting’s rapidly expanding relationship with American professional sports.
