Kentucky just shocked the college football world.
The Wildcats walked into Kyle Field on Saturday and stunned No. 9 Texas A&M, pulling away for a 31-21 victory in the Aggies’ SEC opener. The win gave Kentucky its first victory over a ranked opponent this season and handed Texas A&M its first loss.
The game looked completely different after halftime.
The teams entered the locker room tied 7-7, with both defenses making life difficult for the opposing offenses. But Kentucky came out of halftime with an entirely different level of energy, scoring 21 unanswered points in the third quarter.
Kenny Minchey delivered one of the best performances of his season, completing 14 of 18 passes for 252 yards and two touchdowns. His biggest connection came early in the third quarter when he found Kenny Darby for a 42-yard touchdown that gave Kentucky its first lead of the afternoon.
C.J. Baxter then took over on the ground.
The former Texas running back scored twice in the second half, including a three-yard touchdown that pushed Kentucky’s advantage to 21-7. Baxter finished with 87 rushing yards and two touchdowns.
Kentucky’s defense was just as important.
The Wildcats repeatedly came up with huge stops against Marcel Reed and the Aggies. Sam Greene stopped a fourth-and-inches attempt inside the Kentucky 15-yard line early in the game before later intercepting Reed. Jordan Castell added another interception in the fourth quarter, stopping an A&M drive at the Kentucky 7-yard line.
Texas A&M tried to mount a comeback, cutting the deficit to 31-21 with 3:45 remaining, but Kentucky’s defense refused to give the Aggies another opportunity.
For first-year Kentucky head coach Will Stein, the victory represents his first win over a top-10 opponent. The Wildcats improved to 2-1 overall and 1-1 in SEC play, while Texas A&M dropped to 2-1 and 0-1 in conference play.
Kentucky came into College Station as a significant underdog.
It left with one of the biggest wins of the season so far.
