Falcons Stall As Power Rankings Drop After Shutout

Atlanta Falcons fall to No. 23 in The Athletic rankings after a 16-0 loss to Tampa Bay, while Denver and Chicago surge in Week 9.

NFL Week 9 Power Rankings Shift As Two-Loss Teams Surge

Week 9 power rankings reveal a dramatic shift as the Bills, 49ers, Vikings, and Broncos surge while the trade deadline looms next Tuesday.

The Atlanta Falcons sit at a crossroads as the NFL season hits its midpoint, with their identity still a mystery to observers. They dropped two spots to No. 23 in The Athletic’s latest power rankings released on Tuesday, Nov. 3, following a dismal performance in Tampa Bay. This slump contrasts sharply with the Denver Broncos and Chicago Bears, who both climbed into the top 10 after dominating their respective opponents. The gap between these surging teams and a confused Falcons squad is widening fast.

Yahoo Sports noted that the Falcons look closer to losing to an SEC team than beating the best in the league right now. The team suffered a humiliating 16-0 shutout against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers on Sunday, Nov. 1, at Raymond James Stadium. Although Michael Penix, the quarterback, tossed four interceptions in the match, accounts indicate he was fortunate the total did not reach six or seven. Head coach Kevin Stefanski faces heavy criticism for the loss, with analysts arguing the team should have leaned harder on the run game. Riding Bijan Robinson 90% of the time might not have guaranteed a win, but it would have given Atlanta a better chance in the soggy conditions.

Denver and Chicago Surge Ahead

While Atlanta stumbles, the Denver Broncos and Chicago Bears have established themselves as real contenders in the middle of the pack. The Broncos secured a massive 28-24 victory over the Kansas City Chiefs, a result that sent shockwaves through the league. The Chicago Bears also dominated, routing the Seattle Seahawks 34-17 in a game that highlighted their offensive firepower. ESPN ranks the Buffalo Bills at No. 1 with a 6-1 record after they crushed the Baltimore Ravens 36-10. The San Francisco 49ers hold a bye week at 6-1, while the Jacksonville Jaguars sit at 5-2 following a 42-7 win over the Colts. These teams are proving they can beat top-tier competition when it matters most.

The Tampa Bay Buccaneers made the biggest jump in the rankings, moving up six spots from No. 24 to No. 18 thanks to their shutout of Atlanta. Conversely, the Baltimore Ravens, Philadelphia Eagles, and Atlanta Falcons all fell six spots or more in the latest poll. The Ravens dropped from No. 13 to No. 19, and the Eagles fell from No. 23 to No. 27. The Falcons’ slide to No. 21 in some rankings or No. 23 in others shows just how volatile the middle of the league has become.

Roster Shuffles and Upcoming Challenges

On Monday, Atlanta began addressing its faltering defense by releasing outside linebacker Drake Jackson and defensive lineman Jared Ivey. According to reports, Jared Ivey played in seven games this season, tallying five tackles, six stops, a sack, and six pressures. Despite his struggles against the run in recent games, he was a menace against the Bears earlier in the season. Jackson played only 20 snaps over two games and was inactive for the Buccaneers matchup. Both players could return to the practice squad if another team doesn’t claim them immediately.

The team expects James Pearce Jr. to be ready to go this week, which would provide a significant boost against the Cincinnati Bengals. Abdullah has also been effective as a pass rusher, specifically against the Saints in Week 4 before his absence. The Falcons face a very early kickoff on Sunday, Nov. 8, at 9:30 a.m. ET against the Bengals in Santiago Bernabéu. Joe Burrow has led Cincinnati to three straight wins, making this a brutal test for an Atlanta offense that has found no rhythm. If the Falcons cannot find a way to score, this could mark the beginning of an extended losing streak.

The Path Forward for Atlanta

The Falcons must address their offensive inconsistency immediately or risk falling further in the standings. They cannot afford to let their defense carry the load against a high-powered Bengals team led by a hot Joe Burrow.
