The New England Patriots made a massive move to give Drake Maye a true No. 1 wide receiver, but the decision to trade for A.J. Brown is already raising some serious questions.

The Patriots were hoping Brown would become the missing piece of their offense, giving Maye an elite weapon capable of changing games and helping New England compete with the AFC’s best. Instead, concerns about Brown’s health could turn this blockbuster move into a major headache.

Brown is still recovering from a high ankle sprain, and reports that New England knew about his degenerative knee condition before completing the trade have added another layer of concern. The Patriots knew they were taking a risk when they made the deal, but the question now is whether that risk was worth the price.

Giving up a first-round pick for a proven star is a move that can completely change a franchise. But when that player is dealing with multiple health concerns, the potential downside becomes much harder to ignore.

The Patriots didn’t make this trade just to add another name to the roster. They wanted a receiver who could immediately elevate Maye and help transform the offense into a legitimate threat. If Brown can’t stay on the field consistently, New England could find itself right back where it started — only without the valuable draft pick it surrendered to get him.

That doesn’t mean the trade is automatically a failure. Brown has the talent to make a massive difference when he’s healthy, and one productive stretch could quickly change the conversation. But availability matters, especially when a team invests a first-round pick in a player expected to become a centerpiece of its offense.

For a Patriots team trying to build around Maye, this is a risk that could have major consequences for the future.
