Utes Overcome Second Half Deficit in Top 15 Showdown

The Utah Utes continued their undefeated season Saturday night, rallying to defeat the Houston Cougars 21-13 at Rice-Eccles Stadium. No. 10 Utah overcame a 10 point deficit behind a dominant rushing performance from quarterback Devon Dampier and a critical defensive play late in the fourth quarter.

The victory improved Utah to 7-0 overall and 4-0 in Big 12 play, keeping the Utes in control of their conference championship hopes. Houston, ranked No. 14 entering the matchup, fell to 6-2 overall and suffered a costly defeat after holding the lead deep into the second half.

Houston Controls the First Half

Both defenses made life difficult for the opposing offenses throughout the opening half. Utah struggled to finish drives, missing opportunities to put points on the scoreboard while Houston gradually found its rhythm.

The Cougars took a 3-0 lead into halftime after the Utes failed to capitalize on their scoring opportunities. Houston then extended its advantage early in the third quarter when running back Makhi Hughes scored on a two yard touchdown run, capping a lengthy drive to make it 10-0.

With its undefeated record suddenly in danger, Utah needed an immediate response.

Dampier Leads Utah’s Comeback

Dampier provided the spark Utah desperately needed, breaking free for a 22 yard rushing touchdown late in the third quarter. His score cut Houston’s lead to 10-7 and shifted the momentum toward the home team.

The Utes continued their comeback early in the fourth quarter. Running back Wayshawn Parker finished a drive with a five yard touchdown run, giving Utah its first lead of the night at 14-13.

Dampier’s running ability proved decisive throughout the contest. He finished with approximately 150 rushing yards and two rushing touchdowns, repeatedly creating opportunities when the passing game struggled.

Defense Seals the Victory

Houston still had opportunities to reclaim the lead, but Utah’s defense delivered when it mattered most.

With just over two minutes remaining, defensive lineman Jackson Bennee broke through the offensive line and strip-sacked quarterback Conner Weigman. Utah recovered the fumble deep in Houston territory, setting up Dampier’s second rushing touchdown and extending the lead to 21-13.

Houston’s final drive ended without a touchdown, allowing the Utes to secure another hard-fought victory.

Utah Keeps Its Championship Hopes Alive

The Utes demonstrated resilience in a game where their offense struggled early. Utah will now turn its attention to Cincinnati as it looks to protect its undefeated record and strengthen its position in the Big 12 race.

For Houston, the loss will sting after controlling much of the game, particularly with its offense unable to convert late opportunities into points.
