The Los Angeles Lakers continued their strong start to the 2026-27 NBA season Friday night, defeating the Los Angeles Clippers 125-117 in an exciting battle at Crypto.com Arena. Austin Reaves and Walker Kessler delivered standout performances, helping the Lakers withstand a late Clippers comeback and improve to 2-0.

Reaves led the Lakers with 28 points and nine assists, while Kessler made his presence felt on both ends of the floor with 22 points, eight rebounds, three steals and six blocks. Luka Dončić added 23 points and seven assists as Los Angeles showcased its offensive firepower against its crosstown rival.

Lakers Take Control After Halftime

The Clippers started aggressively, taking a four-point lead after the opening quarter. Brook Lopez gave Los Angeles plenty of trouble inside, scoring consistently around the basket as the visitors attempted to establish control.

The Lakers responded in the second quarter, with Dončić, Reaves and Quentin Grimes helping the offense find its rhythm. The teams traded baskets throughout the period, entering halftime tied after an entertaining first half.

Los Angeles came out of the locker room with a different level of intensity. Reaves attacked the defense, connecting on midrange jumpers and knocking down a three-pointer. Kessler continued to contribute around the rim, while Matisse Thybulle provided an additional scoring boost.

The Lakers outscored the Clippers 39-26 in the third quarter, creating a 13-point advantage heading into the final period.

Clippers Make a Late Push

Despite trailing by double digits, the Clippers refused to surrender. Lopez finished with 22 points, while Darius Garland helped lead the late offensive push.

Los Angeles briefly appeared vulnerable as turnovers and missed shots allowed the Clippers to cut the deficit to six points with less than three minutes remaining.

Kessler answered by converting two crucial free throws, and Reaves followed with a basket that helped stop the Clippers’ momentum. Quentin Grimes also knocked down important free throws late, allowing the Lakers to maintain their advantage.

The Clippers continued fighting, but the Lakers made enough defensive stops to secure the eight-point victory.

Lakers Build Early Momentum

The win gives the Lakers consecutive victories to begin the season. Reaves’ scoring and playmaking, Kessler’s defensive impact and Dončić’s offensive production provided a strong foundation.

Los Angeles will look to carry that momentum into its next matchup against the Utah Jazz on Sunday.
