Cougars Earn Statement Victory to Become Bowl Eligible and Strengthen Big 12 Championship Hopes

The Houston Cougars delivered a statement performance Saturday night, defeating No. 18 Oklahoma State 35-32 in a thrilling matchup at TDECU Stadium. Quarterback Conner Weigman threw for 343 yards and five touchdowns, leading No. 20 Houston to one of its biggest victories of the season.

Head coach Willie Fritz watched his team improve to 6-1 overall and 3-1 in Big 12 play. The victory also made Houston bowl eligible and gave the Cougars a crucial win against a ranked conference opponent.

Weigman Leads Houston’s Offensive Explosion

Weigman was the difference maker throughout the game, consistently finding receivers and delivering touchdowns when Houston needed them most. The senior quarterback continued his impressive season with another explosive performance, keeping the Cougars’ offense ahead of Oklahoma State for much of the contest.

Houston established control early, taking a 14-3 lead into halftime. Weigman connected with tight end Patrick Overmyer for a two yard touchdown before finding wide receiver Amare Thomas for a seven yard scoring reception.

The Cougars’ offense continued producing points after halftime, but Oklahoma State refused to go away. The Cowboys gradually worked their way back into the game, creating a tense fourth quarter.

Thomas was one of Houston’s biggest weapons, finishing with seven receptions for 126 yards and two touchdowns. His ability to make plays downfield helped Houston maintain its advantage against an Oklahoma State defense searching for answers.

Cowboys Fight Back Behind Drew Mestemaker

Oklahoma State quarterback Drew Mestemaker kept the Cowboys competitive with an impressive passing performance of his own. Mestemaker threw for 365 yards and three touchdowns, repeatedly moving the ball against Houston’s defense.

Head coach Eric Morris’ team cut Houston’s advantage to 28-25 early in the fourth quarter after a 66-yard touchdown reception brought the Cowboys back within striking distance.

However, Houston responded immediately.

Weigman engineered an 85 yard scoring drive in approximately two minutes, connecting with Koby Young for a 48 yard touchdown. The play restored a 10-point advantage and gave the Cougars the breathing room they desperately needed.

Oklahoma State continued fighting and scored another touchdown to make it 35-32, but the Cowboys could not complete the comeback.

Houston’s Defense Makes Crucial Plays

Although Weigman’s performance dominated the headlines, Houston’s defense also played a major role in the victory.

The Cougars forced two turnovers, including an interception by Will James, and made a critical fourth-down stop near the goal line. Those plays prevented Oklahoma State from taking control during key moments.

Houston entered the game without three defensive starters, making the unit’s performance even more impressive against a Cowboys offense capable of scoring quickly.

Cougars Build Momentum

The 35-32 victory gives Fritz and Houston significant momentum heading into the next stage of the season. With Weigman playing at an elite level and the defense delivering timely stops, the Cougars have established themselves as a legitimate contender in the Big 12 race.

Houston now has six victories and bowl eligibility, but its ambitions could extend beyond simply reaching the postseason. If Weigman continues producing at this level, the Cougars could remain a serious threat in the conference championship picture.

For Oklahoma State, the narrow defeat is a missed opportunity to earn a major road victory. For Houston, it is another sign that the program is moving in the right direction under Fritz.
