Forget Thursday Night Football.
The NFL is about to turn Melbourne into a football experiment.
The San Francisco 49ers and Los Angeles Rams are about to kick off the first regular-season NFL game ever played in Australia at the Melbourne Cricket Ground.
And basically everything about this game is weird.
The 49ers arrived more than a week ago to adjust to the time change.
The Rams showed up roughly 28 hours before kickoff.
Yes, really.
Los Angeles is betting its normal routine will beat jet lag. San Francisco is betting the opposite approach will work.
So we are about to find out who was right.
Then there is the actual football.
The Rams enter the season as Super Bowl favorites after returning virtually their entire top-ranked offense from 2025.
Matthew Stafford is back after winning MVP.
Davante Adams is back.
Puka Nacua is back.
And Los Angeles added Myles Garrett to a defense that badly needed help.
The 49ers are bringing plenty of firepower, too.
Brock Purdy.
Christian McCaffrey.
George Kittle.
Fred Warner.
Nick Bosa.
This is not some throwaway international exhibition.
These are two NFC West rivals who both went 12-5 last season.
And the Rams are coming off a 41-6 playoff loss to Seattle that ended their Super Bowl hopes. San Francisco has plenty of motivation of its own.
But honestly?
The football almost feels secondary to the spectacle.
More than 100,000 people are expected at the MCG.
The NFL is making its Australian debut.
The Jonas Brothers are performing at halftime.
And two legitimate Super Bowl contenders are about to play football on the other side of the planet.
This is either going to look like the future of the NFL or the strangest Thursday night game we’ve ever seen.
Either way, Australia is about to get one hell of a football game.
