The New York Knicks are officially back.
Not just back in the NBA Finals for the first time since 1999. Not just back as the biggest story in basketball. They are back to the point where even the President of the United States wants to be there.
According to multiple reports, President Donald Trump plans to attend one of the NBA Finals games at Madison Square Garden after receiving an invitation from Knicks owner James Dolan. If Trump attends, he would become the first sitting U.S. president to attend an NBA Finals game.
And honestly, that’s a bigger story than it sounds.
Whether you love Trump or hate him, presidents do not just show up to random sporting events. They attend events that matter. The Super Bowl. Major championship games. Historic moments.
The Knicks have become one of those moments.
For the first time in 27 years, New York is back on basketball’s biggest stage. The last time the Knicks reached the NBA Finals was 1999. Back then, there was no social media, no smartphones, and Madison Square Garden looked completely different than it does today.
Now the Garden is preparing to host its biggest basketball games in a generation.
This isn’t just another NBA Finals appearance.
This is the Knicks.
When the Knicks are relevant, the entire sports world pays attention. Madison Square Garden becomes the center of the basketball universe. Celebrities show up. Former players return. Every ticket becomes impossible to get. The atmosphere becomes unlike anything else in sports.
That is why Trump’s planned attendance matters.
It reflects how massive this story has become nationally. Trump has attended major sporting events throughout his presidency, including the Super Bowl, UFC events, the U.S. Open and other championship showcases. Now he wants to be at Madison Square Garden for the Knicks’ return to the Finals.
And frankly, who can blame him?
Jalen Brunson has turned himself into one of the biggest stars in basketball. Karl-Anthony Towns, Mikal Bridges and OG Anunoby have helped transform New York into a legitimate championship contender. After sweeping the Cleveland Cavaliers in the Eastern Conference Finals, the Knicks are now four wins away from ending a championship drought that stretches back to 1973.
For decades, Knicks fans heard the same jokes.
The Garden was living off its history. The franchise could never get over the hump. New York basketball would never matter again.
Not anymore.
The Knicks are back in the NBA Finals, Madison Square Garden is about to host the biggest basketball games of the century, and even the President wants a seat in the building.
That’s how you know this is different.
