Barcelona Nearly Pull Off Historic Comeback but Atlético Madrid Survive

Barcelona produced a stunning 3–0 victory over Atlético Madrid in the second leg of the Copa del Rey semifinals, but it ultimately wasn’t enough to erase the damage from the first leg. After losing 4–0 in Madrid, the Catalan giants came agonizingly close to one of the great comebacks in recent Spanish football history before Atlético held on to advance 4–3 on aggregate.

From the opening whistle at the Estadi Olímpic Lluís Companys, Barcelona played with the urgency of a team chasing history. Knowing they needed goals quickly, they pressed high, dominated possession, and forced Atlético into a defensive shell almost immediately.

The breakthrough came in the 29th minute, when Marc Bernal fired Barcelona in front to make it 1–0 on the night and cut the aggregate deficit to 4–1. The goal ignited belief across the stadium and injected real tension into what once looked like a finished tie.

Barcelona kept attacking, pushing Atlético deeper and deeper as the half continued. Just before halftime, the hosts earned a massive opportunity when they were awarded a penalty in stoppage time. Raphinha stepped up in the 45+5 minute and calmly buried the spot kick, sending Jan Oblak the wrong way and bringing Barcelona within two goals of leveling the tie.

Suddenly, the impossible comeback felt very real.

The second half became a siege on Atlético Madrid’s goal. Barcelona dominated nearly every aspect of the match, finishing with 70.9% possession, 21 shot attempts, nine shots on target, and an incredible 15 corner kicks. Atlético, meanwhile, struggled to generate any attacking threat, managing just seven shots and two on target.

If not for Jan Oblak, the comeback might have already been complete.

The Atlético goalkeeper made several huge saves to keep his side alive as Barcelona poured forward with wave after wave of attacks. Crosses, corners, and long-range efforts continued to test the visitors’ defense.

Then came the moment that nearly flipped the entire tie.

In the 72nd minute, Marc Bernal struck again, finishing another attacking sequence to make it 3–0 and pull Barcelona within one goal of leveling the aggregate score. The stadium erupted as the possibility of a historic comeback suddenly felt within reach.

For the final 20 minutes, Barcelona threw everything forward. The ball barely left Atlético’s half as the visitors were forced into desperate defending. Every corner kick and every cross into the box felt like it could produce the equalizer.

But Atlético Madrid held on.

Despite the relentless pressure and Barcelona’s overwhelming statistical dominance, the fourth goal never came. When the final whistle blew, Barcelona had won the match 3–0, but Atlético Madrid advanced 4–3 on aggregate thanks to their dominant first-leg performance.

For Barcelona, the night will be remembered as a heroic comeback attempt that came heartbreakingly close. The performance showcased the attacking quality and resilience that has defined many of the club’s famous European nights.

They simply ran out of time.

Atlético Madrid, meanwhile, will gladly accept survival over style. Diego Simeone’s side weathered the storm, relying on Oblak’s heroics and their four-goal cushion from the first leg to secure a place in the Copa del Rey final.

In the end, the semifinal delivered pure knockout drama.

Barcelona came within one goal of completing the miracle.
