College football wouldn’t be college football without obnoxious fanbases. Every program has great fans, but some groups have developed reputations that make the rest of the country absolutely hate them.
Here are my 10 most hated fanbases in college football.
1. Tennessee — All the Confidence, Not Enough Hardware
Nobody becomes more confident after a few wins than Tennessee fans.
The Vols have one of the loudest and most passionate fanbases in the country, but that’s also what makes them so obnoxious. Tennessee hasn’t accumulated the modern championship hardware of Alabama or Georgia, yet its fans can talk like they’ve been running the SEC for years.
Win something first. Then talk.
2. Ohio State — They Think They’re College Football Royalty
Ohio State fans don’t just believe they’re one of the best programs in college football. Sometimes, they act like they’re the program.
The Buckeyes obviously have the history and championships to command respect, but their fans can make every loss feel like a national emergency. Ohio State is elite. That doesn’t mean the entire sport revolves around Columbus.
3. Mississippi State — Those Damn Cowbells
This one is simple.
The cowbells.
Watching Mississippi State on television can become an endurance test when thousands of cowbells are ringing after seemingly every positive play. It’s one of college football’s most recognizable traditions—and easily one of its most irritating.
4. Georgia — The Barking
Georgia fans literally bark at people.
Do we really need much more explanation?
The Bulldogs have backed up plenty of their trash talk with championships under Kirby Smart, but Georgia’s combination of winning, SEC confidence and grown adults barking at opposing fans makes them incredibly easy to hate.
5. Alabama — The Ego Never Left
Alabama fans spent the Nick Saban era dominating college football, and apparently nobody told them that era eventually ended.
Six national championships under Saban gave this fanbase an ego that might never disappear. Alabama remains one of the biggest programs in the sport, but Tide fans sometimes act like every other program exists several levels beneath them.
6. Texas A&M — The Yell Leaders and Traditions
Texas A&M might have the strangest collection of traditions in college football.
The Yell Leaders, Midnight Yell, coordinated chants and seemingly endless list of Aggie traditions make A&M completely unique—but also incredibly easy for opposing fans to clown.
Add in a fanbase that carries itself like A&M is a national powerhouse despite still waiting on modern championship success, and the Aggies easily crack this list.
7. Texas — Horns Down Apparently Ruins Lives
Texas has one of the most recognizable hand signs in sports, but flip it upside down and suddenly we’ve got problems.
The constant controversy surrounding “Horns Down” has made Texas an easy target. If you’re going to have one of college football’s biggest brands and loudest fanbases, you have to accept that everyone else is going to celebrate against you.
8. Michigan — Just Annoying
Michigan fans don’t exactly lack confidence either.
The Wolverines have one of the greatest histories in the sport, and their recent success only made the fanbase louder. Whether it’s arguing about Ohio State, defending Michigan’s place among the sport’s elite or reminding everyone about their history, Wolverines fans always seem ready for an argument.
9. Miami — Blue-Blood Confidence Without the Campus Stadium
Miami fans still carry themselves like “The U” is running college football.
The Hurricanes unquestionably have an incredible history, but their last national championship came in 2001. Their home stadium isn’t even located on campus, yet Miami fans still carry the confidence of a program dominating the sport every season.
The swagger never left. The championships did.
10. Oklahoma — Still Waiting for That Playoff Win
Oklahoma fans love reminding everyone about the Sooners’ history. Unfortunately, recent postseason history hasn’t given them nearly as much to brag about.
Oklahoma reached the four-team College Football Playoff multiple times and never won a semifinal. That’s a rough statistic for a fanbase that regularly talks like the Sooners belong alongside the absolute best programs in the country.
College football needs hated fanbases. The trash talk, traditions, rivalries and ridiculous arguments are part of what makes the sport great.
But if you’re wearing one of these 10 logos, there’s probably a reason the rest of the country enjoys watching you lose.
