Toyota Has it Figured Out: Denny Hamlin Charges to Fourth Pole Award of the Season

The NASCAR Cup Series is back at Chicagoland tomorrow night at 6:00pm EST for the Eero 400. Qualifying was held Saturday afternoon, with Denny Hamlin finishing on the Pole position.

This is Hamlin’s 4th Pole award on the year and his 52nd in his career. He has been on top of qualifying at Martinsville, Michigan, Pocono, and now Chicagoland this season. Following Saturday’s qualifying Hamlin was shocked he got the Pole, said he was aiming for P12 after a lackluster performance in practice on Friday.

But you have to ask, is it a Denny Hamlin thing or a Toyota thing? It is no question Hamlin has incredible speed, but he is not the only Toyota showing speed this weekend. With five other Toyota’s in the Top 10 and eight in the Top 20:

P1: Denny Hamlin (Joe Gibbs Racing)
P5: Ty Gibbs (Joe Gibbs Racing)
P6: Christopher Bell (Joe Gibbs Racing)
P7: Chase Briscoe (Joe Gibbs Racing)
P8: Bubba Wallace (23XI Racing)
P13: Tyler Reddick (23XI Racing)
P17: John Hunter Nemechek (Legacy Motor Club)
P18: Riley Herbst (23XI Racing)

Toyota has won 11 of the 18 Cup Series races this season, and they set themselves up in great position to win again this weekend. They will have some competition with Kyle Larson starting 2nd and Chris Buescher starting 3rd. Buescher is joined in row 2 by teammate Brad Keselowski as well.

It will be a fun and unpredictable race according to the drivers, but it’s hard to not expect a Toyota win after their performance throughout the season as well as their speed in practice in qualifying this weekend. Will anyone bring a challenge to the strong and fast manufacturer, or will it be just another day in the office for Toyota?
