Peyton Krebs Agrees to Four-Year Extension With Buffalo Sabres
The Buffalo Sabres have agreed to a four-year contract with forward Peyton Krebs, keeping the versatile utility player in Buffalo for the foreseeable future.
Krebs is coming off the best season of his NHL career, setting personal highs in every major offensive category. He finished the year with 12 goals, 27 assists, 39 points and 78 penalty minutes.
His versatility has made him a valuable piece of Buffalo’s lineup, allowing him to contribute in a variety of roles. While his long-term ceiling may not project as a first-line forward, he has developed strong chemistry with Tage Thompson and Josh Norris when given the opportunity to play higher in the lineup.
The signing leaves the Sabres with approximately $5.1 million in salary cap space. Buffalo continues to be connected to trade rumors involving Winnipeg Jets goaltender Connor Hellebuyck and has also been mentioned as a potential destination for veteran forward Patrick Kane.
As things currently stand, Krebs projects to begin next season on Buffalo’s fourth line. However, his flexibility gives head coach Lindy Ruff several options if lineup adjustments become necessary.
If Thompson’s line needs a spark, Krebs has already shown he can step into that role. Likewise, if Noah Östlund requires additional development time in the American Hockey League, Krebs could slide onto Konsta Helenius’ wing, complementing Jason Zucker by serving as the line’s primary defensive forward while allowing the other two to focus on generating offense.
Krebs may not be the flashiest player on Buffalo’s roster, but his ability to move throughout the lineup and contribute in multiple situations continues to make him an important piece of the Sabres’ long-term plans.
