Mexico opened its World Cup campaign in style, defeating South Africa 2-0 and taking an early step toward advancing from Group A.
El Tri controlled much of the match, generating quality chances and keeping South Africa off the scoreboard to secure all three points. The victory puts Mexico in a strong position heading into its next group-stage test.
That challenge will come against South Korea, which earned an impressive 2-1 victory over Czechia earlier in the tournament. Korea showed resilience and attacking quality in the win, setting up one of the most intriguing Group A matchups of the opening round.
With both teams sitting on three points, the Mexico-South Korea clash could go a long way toward determining who finishes atop the group and who enters the final round of group play in the driver’s seat.
Mexico will likely enter as the favorite, but South Korea has already proven it can compete on the World Cup stage. A victory would put either nation in excellent position to reach the knockout rounds.
For now, Mexico can enjoy a successful start. The real test may be waiting just around the corner.
It’s Mexico and Korea Republic on Thursday on Big FOX.
