At some point, the football world has to stop calling Lamine Yamal “the future.”
He is the present.
After another spectacular season with Barcelona, the 18-year-old superstar has added La Liga Player of the Season to his growing collection of awards, beating out players such as Kylian Mbappé and several other stars across Spain. Yamal finished the league campaign with 16 goals and 11 assists despite missing the final six matches through injury, while also leading La Liga in assists and successful take-ons as Barcelona defended their league title.
The scary part?
He is still only 18 years old.
For years, football fans have searched for the next generational icon who could eventually carry the sport after Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo. While names like Mbappé, Erling Haaland, and Jude Bellingham have all had their moments, Yamal is beginning to separate himself from the pack.
This season felt different.
It wasn’t just the goals. It wasn’t just the assists. It was the way Barcelona looked whenever he stepped on the pitch. Every touch felt dangerous. Every defender looked nervous. Every match seemed one moment away from becoming another highlight reel.
Barcelona’s title-winning season was built around Yamal’s brilliance, and the teenager delivered week after week under immense pressure. His performances were so dominant that he became the first player to win La Liga’s Player of the Month award three times in a single season.
Now comes the biggest stage of all.
The 2026 FIFA World Cup.
Spain enters the tournament as one of the favorites, and Yamal will be the face of the squad. If he can lead Spain on another deep international run after helping them win Euro 2024, the Ballon d’Or conversation may be over before voting even begins.
The competition is still fierce. Mbappé remains a threat. Harry Kane is coming off an incredible season with Bayern Munich. Ousmane Dembélé and Michael Olise have also put together world-class campaigns. But none of them carry the same combination of production, trophies, age, and global excitement that surrounds Yamal right now.
Even Spain teammate Rodri recently predicted that Yamal will win a Ballon d’Or, calling the young star “an animal” and praising his maturity beyond his years.
The Ballon d’Or has always been about more than statistics. It is about defining an era.
Messi defined one era.
Ronaldo defined another.
And now, as the football world prepares for the biggest World Cup in history across the United States, Mexico, and Canada, it feels like a new era is beginning.
An era led by Lamine Yamal.
If Spain lifts the World Cup trophy this summer, don’t be surprised if the Ballon d’Or follows shortly after. At just 18 years old, football’s next king appears ready to claim his crown.
