Bubba Wallace could have called it a day after crashing in qualifying at Sonoma Raceway.
Instead, he rolled up his sleeves.
Shortly after climbing from his damaged No. 23 Toyota Camry, Wallace was spotted back in the 23XI Racing garage helping crew members repair the car ahead of Sunday’s NASCAR Cup Series race. While many drivers understandably leave the heavy lifting to their over-the-wall crews after a wreck, Wallace chose to stay and lend a hand.
It’s the kind of moment fans don’t always see.
Crew members routinely spend hours repairing damaged race cars after qualifying incidents, often working late into the evening to give their driver the best possible machine on race day. Wallace made sure he was part of that effort after backing his car into the wall while trying to save it during his qualifying lap.
No, turning a wrench isn’t going to magically erase the damage.
But it sends a message.
Wallace understood the extra work his mistake created and wasn’t about to leave his team to tackle it alone. It’s a small gesture that speaks volumes about accountability and the bond between a driver and the men and women who prepare the race car each week.
Sunday will still be an uphill battle from the rear of the field.
Thanks to Wallace, at least the crew won’t have to make that climb by themselves.
