A sold-out crowd at Indianapolis Motor Speedway roared Sunday afternoon as a formation of Black Hawk helicopters thundered over the frontstretch during the pace laps for the 110th running of the Indianapolis 500.
More than 350,000 fans packed the speedway and erupted as the helicopters flew low over the massive grandstands moments before the green flag dropped.
The flyover added to the electric pre-race atmosphere at Indianapolis, where military tributes remain one of the most celebrated traditions of race day.
Moments later, pole winner Álex Palou brought the 33-car field to green to officially begin the Greatest Spectacle in Racing.
