With Tiger Woods Absent, The Masters TV Ratings Could Swing

AUGUSTA, Ga. — The 2026 edition of The Masters will proceed without one of its biggest television draws, and that absence could be felt beyond the fairways.

Tiger Woods, a five-time Masters champion and one of the most influential figures in golf history, is not competing this year as he continues to recover from injury. His absence removes a player who has consistently driven viewership and casual fan interest whenever he tees it up.

Historically, Woods’ presence has had a measurable impact on ratings. Broadcasts featuring Woods in contention — or even simply in the field — have routinely delivered significant audience increases compared to years when he is not competing. His return to the Masters in 2019, which culminated in a victory, produced one of the most-watched golf telecasts in decades.

Without Woods, networks will rely more heavily on the current generation of stars to carry viewership.

Players such as Scottie Scheffler, Rory McIlroy and Jon Rahm headline the field and provide strong competitive storylines. McIlroy’s return as defending champion and career Grand Slam winner adds intrigue, while Scheffler’s position atop the world rankings offers a clear focal point.

Still, Woods’ unique ability to draw crossover audiences — including viewers who may not otherwise follow golf — is difficult to replace.

The Masters remains one of the most-watched events in the sport regardless of field, and its tradition and prestige typically ensure strong ratings. However, the absence of Woods introduces uncertainty around just how high those numbers can climb in 2026.

The tournament will still deliver drama. The question is whether it can match the same level of attention without its most recognizable figure.
