With just five days left in the NBA regular season, the Western Conference is delivering exactly what fans hoped for—chaos, momentum swings, and a playoff picture that still has serious questions.
At the top, the Oklahoma City Thunder (62–16) have separated themselves as the clear No. 1 seed. With a dominant +11.7 point differential and wins in nine of their last 10, OKC looks like the team to beat in the West.
But right behind them? Things get very interesting.
The San Antonio Spurs (60–19) are the hottest team in basketball, winning 28 of their last 31 games. They’ve surged into the No. 2 spot and are applying real pressure on OKC heading into the final stretch. This isn’t just a good team—it’s a team peaking at the perfect time.
Then come the Denver Nuggets (51–28), who are on an absolute tear with nine straight wins. Quietly, Denver has built momentum that could make them one of the most dangerous teams in the entire conference.
The Los Angeles Lakers (50–28) currently sit fourth, trying to hold position in a tightly packed race. But unlike the East, the West’s middle tier is far more crowded—and far less forgiving.
Right behind them, the Houston Rockets (49–29) are red hot, riding a six-game win streak into the final week. They’ve locked up a playoff spot but are still very much in play to climb higher. Nobody wants to see a team this hot in the first round.
The Minnesota Timberwolves (46–32) currently hold the 6-seed—the final guaranteed playoff spot—but they are far from safe. With just a few games left, one slip could drop them straight into the play-in.
And that’s where things turn into a war.
The Phoenix Suns (43–35) sit at No. 7, followed by the Los Angeles Clippers (40–38), Portland Trail Blazers (40–39), and Golden State Warriors (36–42) rounding out the play-in picture. All four teams have officially clinched at least a play-in berth—but the order is far from decided.
The difference between 7 and 10 in the West is massive. Finish 7th or 8th, and you get two chances to win one game. Finish 9th or 10th, and your season is on life support—two straight must-win games just to make the playoffs.
Phoenix has the edge right now, but they’ve struggled recently. The Clippers and Blazers are hovering right around .500, while Golden State is trying to stay alive despite inconsistency down the stretch.
And then there’s the biggest storyline looming over the West:
Luka Dončić is out for the remainder of the regular season with a hamstring injury. Will he be able to play in the First Round in just over a week? Only time will tell.
So here’s where things stand with five days left:
- Thunder (62–16) sitting comfortably at No. 1
- Spurs (60–19) surging and closing fast
- Nuggets (51–28) red hot with 9 straight wins
- Lakers (50–28) trying to hold position in a tight race
- Rockets (49–29) climbing with a 6-game win streak
- Timberwolves (46–32) barely holding onto the 6-seed
- Suns (43–35), Clippers (40–38), Blazers (40–39), Warriors (36–42) battling in the play-in
Every matchup matters. Every seed matters.
Because in the Western Conference, there are no easy paths—only survival.
