NCAA Set to Shake Up College Football Season

College football as we know it could be on the verge of a major shift—and it’s one that will impact everything from scheduling to player health to the future of the sport.

The NCAA is recommending that, starting in 2027, the season officially begin earlier than ever before, moving kickoff to the Thursday of what is currently known as “Week 0.”

At first glance, it might not seem like a big deal.

But this change could reshape the entire calendar.

Under the proposal, teams would still play a 12-game regular season—but instead of squeezing it into a tighter window, they’d have 14 weeks to do it, allowing for two bye weeks across the season.

And that’s where the real story is.

This move is being driven largely by player health concerns. Coaches and administrators have pushed for years to create more flexibility, arguing that the current schedule puts too much physical and mental strain on players—especially with expanded conference schedules and roster limitations.

In simple terms: more rest, less wear and tear.

But there’s another layer here.

An earlier start could also open the door for future College Football Playoff expansion adjustments, giving the sport more flexibility on the back end of the season without pushing the national championship deeper into January.

This isn’t just about August—it’s about the future of the postseason.

The proposal would also eliminate the growing trend of teams applying for waivers to start early. In recent years, more and more programs have scheduled games before the official start date, creating an uneven system. This change would standardize everything across the board.

But like any major change, there are trade-offs.

Starting earlier means training camp moves deeper into the summer, cutting into what has traditionally been downtime for players and staff. And for fans, it means college football creeping even closer to dominating the sports calendar year-round.

Still, the message from the NCAA is clear:

Change is coming—and it’s coming fast.

If approved, this would mark one of the most significant structural shifts in college football in years. Not just when games are played…

But how the entire season is built.

Because in today’s era of expansion, money, and player safety concerns, even something as simple as the calendar can change everything.
