The Saints have just become the NFC South favorites

The New Orleans Saints may have quietly made one of the most important moves of NFL free agency — and it could change the entire NFC South race.

New Orleans has agreed to a four-year, $52 million deal with star running back Travis Etienne Jr., bringing the former Jacksonville Jaguars playmaker back to his home state of Louisiana.

And if the Saints offense clicks the way it could, the rest of the NFC South might be in trouble.

A massive offensive addition

Etienne instantly becomes one of the most explosive players on the Saints roster. The former first-round pick spent the first four seasons of his career with the Jacksonville Jaguars, producing nearly 3,800 rushing yards while also becoming a dangerous receiving threat out of the backfield.

He’s coming off another productive season in 2025, rushing for 1,107 yards and seven touchdowns while averaging more than four yards per carry.

That kind of production gives New Orleans something every contender needs: a game-breaking running back who can control games on the ground while also creating explosive plays.

A dangerous backfield in New Orleans

What makes this move even more intriguing is how Etienne fits with veteran running back Alvin Kamara.

Kamara has been the face of the Saints’ offense for years, but the addition of Etienne creates one of the most versatile backfields in the entire league. With Kamara’s elite receiving ability and Etienne’s explosive rushing style, the Saints now have multiple ways to attack defenses.

It also gives New Orleans insurance for the future. Kamara is entering the final stretch of his contract, and the team clearly wanted to ensure the running game remains a strength moving forward.

Why this could swing the NFC South

The NFC South has been one of the most unpredictable divisions in football over the past few seasons. With teams like the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, Atlanta Falcons, and Carolina Panthers all trying to rebuild or retool, the division has been wide open.

That’s exactly why the Etienne signing could be so important.

If the Saints can pair a productive ground game with a stable passing attack, they suddenly look like one of the most balanced teams in the division. Running the ball effectively has always been a cornerstone of successful teams in this division, and Etienne gives New Orleans a legitimate offensive centerpiece.

A homecoming with huge expectations

There’s also a personal element to this move. Etienne grew up in Jennings, Louisiana, making this signing something of a homecoming for the talented running back.

Returning to play in front of family and local fans adds an emotional layer to the deal — and often those situations bring out the best performances from players.

The bigger picture

Free agency is still just getting started, but the Saints may have already made one of the most impactful moves of the offseason.

Adding a proven 1,000-yard running back in his prime gives New Orleans an offensive weapon that can immediately change games.

If everything comes together in 2026, the Saints might not just be competitive in the NFC South.

They might be the team everyone else in the division is chasing.
