New York Places Franchise Tag on Breece Hall

The New York Jets made a major decision ahead of the NFL franchise-tag deadline, placing the franchise tag on star running back Breece Hall to ensure he remains with the team for the 2026 season.

The tag is the non-exclusive franchise tag, which means Hall is set to earn roughly $14.3 million on a one-year deal if he signs it. He can still negotiate with other teams, but the Jets would have the right to match any offer — and if they choose not to, the team signing him would have to give up two first-round draft picks as compensation.

The move came just before the league’s tagging deadline after the Jets and Hall were unable to finalize a long-term contract extension. However, the tag doesn’t end negotiations. Both sides can still work toward a multi-year deal until July 15, which remains the preferred outcome for the franchise.

Hall has become one of the most important pieces of the Jets’ offense since being drafted in the second round of the 2022 NFL Draft. The 24-year-old is coming off a strong season in which he rushed for 1,065 yards and five touchdowns, becoming the first Jets running back to surpass the 1,000-yard mark in a season since 2015.

Keeping Hall in New York was clearly a priority for the franchise. The Jets view him as the engine of their offense, and tagging him guarantees that their most explosive offensive weapon won’t hit free agency this offseason.

For now, Hall’s future remains tied to New York — at least for the 2026 season. Whether this tag turns into a long-term deal or simply a one-year commitment will likely be decided over the coming months as negotiations continue.
