March Madness Just Got Hit With a Shocking Off-Court Scandal

Just days before the NCAA Tournament begins, the Alabama Crimson Tide program has been rocked by unexpected off-court news involving one of its top players.

Star guard Aden Holloway was arrested Monday morning in Tuscaloosa on felony marijuana charges, according to law enforcement officials. Authorities from the West Alabama Narcotics Task Force reportedly conducted a search of a residence and discovered more than a pound of marijuana, drug paraphernalia, and cash.

Holloway, 21, was charged with first-degree possession of marijuana and failure to affix a tax stamp, both of which are felony charges under Alabama law. He was taken to the Tuscaloosa County Jail, where his bond was set at $5,000.

The timing of the arrest could not be worse for Alabama.

The Crimson Tide were just announced as a No. 4 seed in the NCAA Tournament Midwest Region and are scheduled to face No. 13 seed Hofstra in the first round later this week. The program has not yet announced whether Holloway will face internal discipline or if he will be available to play.

That uncertainty could have major implications for Alabama’s tournament hopes.

Holloway has been one of the most important players on the roster this season. The junior guard is Alabama’s second-leading scorer, averaging 16.8 points, 3.8 assists, and 2.8 rebounds per game, while shooting nearly 44% from three-point range. His ability to stretch the floor and create offense has been a key part of head coach Nate Oats’ high-powered offensive system.

Holloway’s path to Alabama has already been unique. The former McDonald’s All-American began his college career with the Auburn Tigers before transferring to Alabama in 2024, where he quickly became a major contributor in the backcourt.

Now, instead of focusing solely on March Madness, the Crimson Tide must deal with a developing situation involving one of their top players.

Whether Holloway plays in the tournament — or faces suspension from the team — remains unclear. But one thing is certain: just days before the biggest event in college basketball, Alabama suddenly has a major distraction.

And with March Madness about to begin, the timing of this shocking arrest could not be worse for the Crimson Tide.
