The latest Week 19 AP Top 25 poll is out, and while the rankings themselves sparked plenty of debate, the biggest headline belongs to one program making history.
The Duke Blue Devils men’s basketball are once again the No. 1 team in the country — but this time it comes with a milestone. Duke’s latest appearance atop the rankings marks the 150th time the program has been ranked No. 1 in the AP Poll, the most in college basketball history.
The Blue Devils received 56 of the 60 first-place votes after another strong week that included wins over rivals NC State and North Carolina.
With March approaching, Duke continues to look like the team everyone else is chasing.
Duke stays in control of the national title race
At 29–2, Duke has built one of the most complete resumes in college basketball this season. The team’s balance on both ends of the floor and strong late-season momentum have helped solidify its grip on the top spot for the third straight week.
Head coach Jon Scheyer believes his team is peaking at the right time.
“We’ve put ourselves in a position to do something special and make a run,” Scheyer said after the rankings were released.
The Blue Devils now enter the ACC Tournament as the No. 1 seed and one of the clear favorites to cut down the nets in April.
Arizona and Michigan remain right behind them
While Duke sits comfortably at No. 1, the teams chasing them are just as dangerous.
The Arizona Wildcats men’s basketball stayed at No. 2 with a 29–2 record, collecting four first-place votes. Arizona’s balanced roster and efficient offense have made them one of the most consistent teams in the country.
Right behind them is the Michigan Wolverines men’s basketball, who remain No. 3 after a major win over rival Michigan State. The Wolverines earned the final first-place vote and continue to build a resume that could earn them a No. 1 seed in the NCAA Tournament.
Florida and Houston surge into the top five
Two teams making major noise near the top of the poll are the Florida Gators men’s basketball and Houston Cougars men’s basketball.
Florida climbed to No. 4, its highest ranking since early in the season, while Houston jumped two spots to No. 5 thanks to its elite defense and strong finish to conference play.
Meanwhile, defending powerhouse UConn Huskies men’s basketball slipped slightly to No. 6 after a recent loss.
One of the strangest rankings: undefeated but still No. 20
Perhaps the most fascinating storyline in the poll belongs to Miami RedHawks men’s basketball.
Despite being a perfect 31–0, Miami (Ohio) sits at just No. 20 in the rankings. The undefeated record is impressive, but voters remain skeptical due to the program’s relatively weak strength of schedule compared to power-conference teams.
Still, entering March undefeated guarantees the RedHawks will be one of the most intriguing teams to watch.
March chaos is coming
With conference tournaments about to begin and Selection Sunday approaching quickly, the AP Poll is starting to mirror what the NCAA Tournament bracket could look like.
Right now, Duke sits at the top — and history says they belong there.
But with elite teams like Arizona, Michigan, Florida, and Houston right behind them, the race for the national championship is far from settled.
And if college basketball has taught fans anything over the years, it’s this:
Once March begins, rankings stop mattering — and chaos usually takes over.
