College sports could be heading toward one of the biggest shakeups in its history — and the move might come directly from the White House.
During a high-profile meeting with leaders from across college athletics, President Donald Trump announced plans to issue a sweeping executive order aimed at solving what he called the growing crisis in college sports. The order, he said, would attempt to address nearly every major issue currently facing the NCAA landscape.
Trump didn’t hold back when describing his plan.
He said the order would be “very all-encompassing” and could solve “every problem in this room.”
The bold claim came after a White House roundtable featuring dozens of influential figures in sports, including conference commissioners, athletic directors, lawmakers, and legendary coaches. The goal of the meeting was simple: figure out how to stabilize a system that many believe is spiraling out of control.
The NIL Era Has Turned College Sports Upside Down
The biggest issue discussed at the meeting was Name, Image, and Likeness (NIL) — the rule change that now allows college athletes to earn money from endorsements and sponsorships.
Since NIL was legalized in 2021 following a major Supreme Court ruling, the entire college sports ecosystem has changed dramatically.
Top football and basketball players are now earning millions of dollars through NIL deals, which has triggered what many administrators call a financial arms race between universities trying to recruit elite talent.
Trump and several sports leaders argued the current system is becoming unsustainable. Some universities are reportedly running large deficits to compete in recruiting and maintain their athletic programs.
Even more concerning to some administrators: smaller programs and Olympic sports could disappear entirely if the current spending trend continues.
Trump Says the Entire College System Is at Risk
Trump went even further during the meeting, warning that the consequences could go beyond athletics.
He said the rising financial pressure created by NIL payments could threaten the broader college system itself if changes aren’t made quickly.
His proposed executive order would attempt to push the federal government and Congress toward a nationwide solution that could standardize rules around athlete compensation, transfers, and NCAA governance.
However, Trump acknowledged that the move will almost certainly trigger lawsuits.
In fact, he openly predicted legal challenges the moment the order is announced.
What Could Actually Change?
While the full details of the executive order haven’t been released yet, discussions at the roundtable focused on several potential reforms:
• Creating a national NIL framework
• Limiting the influence of NIL collectives in recruiting
• Protecting funding for Olympic and non-revenue sports
• Establishing clearer rules for athlete transfers and eligibility
Some lawmakers are already working on related legislation, including a proposal that would give the NCAA limited antitrust protection and create a more structured financial system for college athletics.
But with Congress moving slowly, Trump appears ready to act first.
A Turning Point for College Athletics?
Whether the executive order actually reshapes the system remains uncertain.
Legal experts say federal action in college sports would almost certainly face court challenges, especially because NIL rights were heavily influenced by previous court decisions.
Still, the fact that the issue has reached the White House shows how dramatically college athletics has changed over the past few years.
Between billion-dollar TV deals, NIL collectives, and the transfer portal transforming roster building, the traditional model of college sports has been completely rewritten.
Now, the next chapter might be written in Washington.
And if Trump follows through on his promise, the future of college sports could change almost overnight.
