Did Arizona Just Lock Up the Overall No. 1 Seed?

The Big 12 championship delivered exactly what college basketball fans hoped for: a showdown between two of the nation’s best teams. In the end, it was the Arizona Wildcats who stood tallest, defeating the Houston Cougars 79–74 to capture the Big 12 Tournament title and build major momentum heading into the NCAA Tournament.

The victory carried extra meaning for Arizona. Houston won the Big 12 tournament the year before, and the Cougars entered the championship game looking to defend their crown. Instead, the Wildcats flipped the script, using balanced scoring and clutch late-game execution to secure the win and complete a revenge victory on one of the nation’s toughest teams.

Arizona controlled much of the game thanks to strong performances from its young stars. Freshmen Koa Peat and Brayden Burries each scored 21 points, becoming the first freshman duo to both reach 20 points in a Big 12 Tournament game. Their scoring burst helped Arizona build key momentum throughout the contest.

Houston didn’t go away quietly. The Cougars, known for their elite defense under head coach Kelvin Sampson, mounted a major run in the second half and briefly shifted the momentum with a 14–0 surge. But Arizona responded with composure, knocking down key shots and sealing the game at the free-throw line in the closing moments.

The win capped an incredible run for Arizona, which entered the NCAA Tournament on a nine-game winning streak and with one of the best records in the country. The Wildcats also completed a rare sweep by winning both the Big 12 regular season and tournament championships, a sign of just how dominant they’ve been throughout the season.

For head coach Tommy Lloyd, the title adds another milestone to an already impressive tenure in Tucson. Arizona has quickly become one of the nation’s most consistent contenders under his leadership, and the Wildcats now appear poised for a deep March Madness run.

Houston, meanwhile, remains one of the most dangerous teams in the country despite the loss. The Cougars’ defensive identity and tournament experience make them a team nobody will want to face when the NCAA bracket is revealed.

But for now, the spotlight belongs to Arizona. In the biggest game of the Big 12 season, the Wildcats proved they could beat one of the nation’s toughest teams—and they did it with the entire college basketball world watching.
