David Lipsky Goes on Tear at Valspar Championship

PALM HARBOR, Fla. — David Lipsky made a loud move Friday afternoon at the Valspar Championship, firing a blistering 6-under 65 to vault himself firmly into contention heading into the weekend.

Lipsky, who teed off early in the second round at the Copperhead Course at Innisbrook Resort, wasted little time getting going. He pieced together a clean, controlled round highlighted by steady ball striking and a hot putter, taking advantage of scoring opportunities while avoiding the big mistakes that often derail rounds at one of the PGA Tour’s more demanding layouts.

The 65 marked one of the better rounds of the day and pushed Lipsky to 8-under par through two rounds, placing him near the top of the leaderboard as the afternoon wave continued.

On a course known for punishing even slight misses — particularly through the infamous “Snake Pit” closing stretch — Lipsky’s precision stood out. He carded multiple birdies while limiting damage, showcasing the type of disciplined play required to contend at Copperhead, where par is often a good score.

The 37-year-old, a veteran still searching for consistent footing among the PGA Tour’s elite, found a rhythm that few could match Friday. With leaders like Sungjae Im and Brandt Snedeker setting the early pace earlier in the tournament, Lipsky’s charge injected fresh intrigue into a crowded leaderboard.

Lipsky will enter the weekend in a strong position, and if Friday’s round is any indication, he has both the form and confidence to stay in the mix. The challenge now becomes sustaining that level of play over the final 36 holes on a course that rarely gives anything away.

If he can do that, Friday afternoon may be remembered as the moment his week truly took off.
