RIO GRANDE, Puerto Rico — Chandler Blanchet grabbed the early lead Thursday at the Puerto Rico Open, firing an 8-under 64 in the opening round at Grand Reserve Golf Club.
Blanchet’s round featured a steady mix of birdies and clean ball-striking to take a one-shot lead after Day 1 of the PGA Tour’s alternate-field event.
Gordon Sargent sits alone in second at 7-under 65, while a group that includes Adam Hadwin and Adam Svensson is among those chasing the lead after solid opening rounds.
The tournament also featured a notable debut from John Daly II, the son of two-time major champion John Daly, who opened with a 2-under 70 in his first PGA Tour start.
The Puerto Rico Open continues Friday with the second round at Grand Reserve Golf Club as players chase valuable FedEx Cup points and a spot in the PGA Tour winner’s circle.
