Are the Falcons quietly winning the offseason? Grading Atlanta’s moves so far

The Atlanta Falcons have entered the 2026 offseason with one clear goal: fix the roster quickly and compete again in the NFC. And while the league year is still young, Atlanta has already made a series of moves that suggest the franchise is trying to build a balanced, competitive team around its young core.

From adding offensive weapons to pursuing a potential franchise quarterback, the Falcons’ offseason has been aggressive — and it might not even be finished yet.

Key additions and roster moves

One of Atlanta’s early priorities was improving depth on offense. The team reportedly added wide receiver Jahan Dotson on a two-year deal, giving the Falcons another receiving option behind their top targets. Dotson once showed promise as a first-round pick and could thrive in a complementary role if he rediscovers his rookie-year form.

Atlanta also focused on stability at tight end, bringing back veteran Austin Hooper to add experience and depth to the offense.

However, the Falcons also lost a productive player this offseason. Running back Tyler Allgeier departed for the Arizona Cardinals, ending a run in Atlanta where he scored 20 touchdowns and rushed for nearly 2,900 yards.

Despite that loss, the Falcons still have a strong offensive foundation built around star running back Bijan Robinson, who remains one of the most explosive young players in the league.

The quarterback question

The biggest storyline of Atlanta’s offseason, however, revolves around quarterback.

With uncertainty surrounding Michael Penix Jr. — who is recovering from a torn ACL — and the expected release of veteran quarterback Kirk Cousins, the Falcons have been heavily linked to former Miami Dolphins quarterback Tua Tagovailoa.

Atlanta is reportedly one of the teams most interested in signing Tagovailoa after the Dolphins decided to move on from him and absorb a record $99 million dead cap hit.

For the Falcons, the appeal is obvious. Tagovailoa has proven he can lead an efficient offense and even led the NFL in passing yards in 2023.

If Atlanta manages to land him, the entire outlook of their offense could change overnight.

The bigger picture

The Falcons appear to be executing a calculated strategy: add depth and offensive weapons now, then solve the quarterback position.

If they successfully sign Tagovailoa, Atlanta would suddenly have a roster built around a capable quarterback, a superstar running back, and an improved receiving corps — a combination that could make them a legitimate contender in the NFC South.

Final offseason grade (so far)

It’s still early in free agency, but Atlanta’s approach deserves credit.

They’ve added depth, kept flexibility, and positioned themselves to make a potentially franchise-altering move at quarterback.

Current grade: B+

But if the Falcons land Tua Tagovailoa?

That grade could jump to an A very quickly.
