Rick Pitino suffers most embarrassing loss at St John’s as UConn takes them apart

What was supposed to be a battle for Big East supremacy turned into a one-sided statement. Inside a roaring home arena, UConn delivered a complete dismantling of St. John’s, crushing Rick Pitino’s Red Storm by 32 points in a stunning and emphatic victory. In a matchup between the conference’s top two teams separated by just half a game entering the night, the Huskies didn’t just win — they embarrassed one of the nation’s hottest teams.

UConn controlled the game from the opening tip and never let St. John’s breathe. The Huskies shot 47% from the field compared to a disastrous 20% for St. John’s, who couldn’t buy a basket all night. The Red Storm finished just 11-for-56 from the floor and 5-for-20 from three, one of their worst offensive performances of the season. Meanwhile, UConn’s offense was balanced, efficient, and relentless.

The star of the night was Tarris Reed Jr., who dominated both ends of the floor with 20 points, 11 rebounds, and an incredible six blocks. Reed completely controlled the paint, altering shots, cleaning the glass, and finishing inside with authority. His physical presence overwhelmed St. John’s frontcourt and set the tone defensively.

Alex Karaban added 14 points and continued to be a steady offensive force, while Solo Ball chipped in 11 points and hit timely perimeter shots. Braylon Mullins also made a major impact, knocking down three three-pointers and finishing with nine points. Silas Demary Jr. quietly orchestrated the offense, finishing with seven points, eight rebounds, and five assists in an all-around performance that showcased UConn’s depth.

The numbers tell the story of total domination.

UConn outrebounded St. John’s 41-37, but the real difference came in defensive intensity and execution. The Huskies forced tough shots all night and held the Red Storm to just 12 points in the paint while scoring 42 themselves. UConn also controlled the tempo, outscoring St. John’s 14-0 in fast break points and turning defense into easy offense.

St. John’s simply had no answers.

Leading scorer RJ Luis Jr. was held in check, and the entire Red Storm offense struggled to generate clean looks. Bryce Hopkins shot just 3-for-14, and Dillon Mitchell failed to score in 37 minutes. The frustration was evident throughout the night, and the game quickly spiraled out of reach.

This loss was the worst of Rick Pitino’s tenure at St. John’s and a shocking collapse for a team that entered the night with a 22-6 overall record and legitimate conference title aspirations.

UConn, on the other hand, looked every bit like a championship contender.

The Huskies led by as many as 36 points and held the lead for 97% of the game. Their defense suffocated St. John’s, their offense executed efficiently, and their home crowd fueled every run. It was the type of performance that sends a message not just to the Big East, but to the entire country.

With the win, UConn improved to 26-3 overall and took control of first place in the conference standings. More importantly, they proved they can dominate elite competition when playing at their best.

For St. John’s, this was a wake-up call.

For UConn, it was a warning shot.

And if this performance was any indication, the road to the Big East title — and potentially much more — runs through Storrs.
