In a hostile environment against a gritty opponent, the Kansas Jayhawks leaned on their star when it mattered most — and Darryn Peterson delivered.
Peterson’s late-game poise and scoring touch powered Kansas to a hard-fought 64–61 road victory over Texas Tech, reinforcing his reputation as one of the most reliable closers in college basketball.
With Allen Fieldhouse far away and United Supermarkets Arena rocking, Kansas needed a steady presence in the final minutes. Peterson provided exactly that. He finished with a team-high 19 points, knocking down three three-pointers and going 6-for-8 at the free-throw line — including two critical makes while Kansas trailed by three late.
Each time Texas Tech threatened to seize momentum, Peterson calmly responded. Whether it was stepping into a jumper, attacking a closeout, or earning trips to the line, he consistently made the right play when pressure peaked.
The game was anything but comfortable. Texas Tech battled on the glass and defended with physicality, keeping the Jayhawks within reach throughout the second half. Despite being without starting point guard Christian Anderson, the Red Raiders played with urgency, forcing 15 Kansas turnovers and creating multiple empty possessions.
That relentless pressure made Peterson’s performance even more impressive.
After a quiet stretch midway through the second half, he took control down the stretch. His confidence never wavered, and his composure in the final two minutes stood out, as every possession carried heightened importance.
Flory Bidunga added 14 points and nine rebounds, while Melvin Council Jr. contributed 16 points, helping Kansas control the paint and withstand Texas Tech’s rebounding edge. Still, when the game tightened, the ball found Peterson — and he delivered nearly every time.
Texas Tech was led by LeJuan Watts’ 19 points and 12 rebounds, while Donovan Atwell’s perimeter shooting kept the crowd engaged. The Red Raiders’ effort never faded, but late missed opportunities and Kansas’ ability to convert at the free-throw line proved decisive.
For Kansas, this win meant more than just another mark in the standings. Road victories in conference play are rare, and this one demanded toughness, patience, and leadership. Peterson embodied all three.
In a season filled with rising expectations, performances like this continue to elevate his status as a go-to scorer and trusted closer. Against pressure, noise, and a determined opponent, Darryn Peterson stayed calm — and carried Kansas to another signature road victory.
