The NFL’s annual franchise and transition tag window opened Tuesday, giving teams two weeks to designate one of their own impending free agents and lock in exclusive negotiating rights for the 2026 season. The window runs through 4 p.m. ET on March 3.
For clubs across the league, the opening of the tag period marks the first meaningful roster-building moment of the 2026 offseason following Super Bowl LX and sets the stage for the legal tampering period and full free-agency negotiations next month.
While most teams historically delay decisions until closer to the deadline, several high-profile players are already drawing attention as potential tag candidates. NFL insiders and analysts have highlighted a list of stars expected to be in play during the next week and a half.
Among the most talked-about is Dallas Cowboys wide receiver George Pickens, who is widely viewed as the frontrunner to receive his team’s franchise tag after a breakout season.
Other names circulating in league circles include tight end Kyle Pitts of the Atlanta Falcons and a handful of veterans whose clubs could use the one-year designation to either keep them in place or buy time on a long-term contract.
Not every star is expected to be tagged, though. Reports emerging Tuesday indicated the Seattle Seahawks are unlikely to place the franchise tag on Super Bowl LX MVP running back Kenneth Walker III, a signal that some teams may choose to pursue extensions or let key free agents test the open market instead.
Under league rules, a designated player can negotiate a multiyear deal with his team through July 15; if no agreement is reached, he will play the 2026 season under the one-year tender. Exclusive and non-exclusive franchise tags, as well as the transition tag, are all tools clubs can employ but largely hinge on cap considerations and long-term planning.
With free agency set to formally begin in March, the decisions made in this window will shape the early contours of the offseason — and could provide a preview of where some of the league’s top talents will be playing next season.
